High School Baseball : Carroll Pitches Crespi Into 1st-Place Tie

Some coaches would worry about throwing their ace two games in a row. But Crespi’s Scott Muckey has no such concerns when it comes to Dan Carroll.

“I worry more when he has a lot of rest,” Muckey said.

Carroll notched his second win in as many days, allowing one earned run over five innings as Crespi beat Bosco Tech, 18-9, Wednesday in a Del Rey League game. Crespi (15-10, 7-4 in league play) has won six consecutive league games and has moved into a first-place tie with Notre Dame with one game remaining.

Mark Cavaretta was 3 for 4 with a home run and four runs batted in for Crespi and Ken Franco added 2 hits, 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs.

North Hollywood 6, Fairfax 3--Russell Greene’s two-run double keyed a five-run second inning and Bennie Valdez and Erik Martinez combined for a two-hitter in the East Valley League game at Fairfax.

Greene was 2 for 4 and Steve Elbaum added a double for the Huskies (10-10, 10-6), who have won six of their last eight games and are tied for second with Sylmar with two games remaining.

Grant 5, Verdugo Hills 2--Jim Mattman hit his first home run and Manny Toledo had two hits and two RBIs as the Lancers won an East Valley League game at Verdugo Hills. Grant (11-9, 9-7) is one game behind Sylmar and North Hollywood, who are tied for second.

Kennedy 9, Van Nuys 3--Gino Tagliaferri had three hits to key a 12-hit Kennedy attack in the Mid-Valley League game at Van Nuys.

Mike Engler had a two-run double for Van Nuys (5-18, 1-13). Robert Peacock was 2 for 3 and knocked in a run.

Shawn Madden hit a home run for Kennedy (11-3 in league play).

Granada Hills 11, Monroe 9--The Highlanders scored six runs in the third inning and survived a bases-loaded threat in the seventh to win a Mid-Valley League game at Monroe.

Granada Hills (14-4, 10-4) is one game behind Kennedy with one game remaining.

Jeff Adams (7-2) picked up the win and Eric Harris pitched the seventh to earn the save. Harris allowed a single and two walks to load the bases but recorded a strikeout to end the game.

Tom Konkel was 5 for 5 with three RBIs for Monroe (8-15, 5-9).

San Fernando 5, Birmingham 1--Josh Bergara, Bobby Corrales and Alfred Nevarez hit run-scoring singles to key a three-run rally in the fourth inning of the Mid-Valley League game at San Fernando.

Rudy Vargas (3-1) tossed a five-hitter and did not allow a walk for the Tigers (11-5, 11-3).

El Camino Real 10, Reseda 8--The Conquistadores scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a West Valley League win at El Camino Real and keep their playoff hopes alive.

El Camino (8-10, 5-9) is tied with Taft and Cleveland for third place. Reseda (7-11, 4-10) dropped a game behind.

Ryan McGuire and Bryce Welch each hit two-run doubles in the sixth.

Cleveland 8, Taft 7--Sean Burwell singled home the winning run in the sixth inning to keep Cleveland’s West Valley League playoffs hopes alive.

Tom Gibson, who had two doubles, reached base on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored the go-ahead run on Burwell’s single.

Kirk Surabian (5-4) gave up six runs in the first but went the distance for the victory.

Cleveland (6-12, 5-9) could earn a playoff berth with a victory in its next game.

Westlake 6, Channel Islands 0--Derek Tamburro hit a grand slam and Mike Eby tossed a four-hit shutout in the Marmonte League game at Westlake.

Mike Campbell doubled and scored Westlake’s first run on John Stephens’ single in the third inning. Tamburro’s home run ignited a five-run rally in the fourth.

Chuck Foster was 3 for 3 and scored a run for Westlake.

Royal 11, Camarillo 6--Ron Bauer stroked the game-winning hit as Royal exploded for five runs in the top of the eighth inning of the Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Jason Jones hit a solo home run, his school-record sixth of the year, for Royal.

Bud Wray was 2 for 4 with a two-run home run for Camarillo (5-7 in league play).

Queen of Angels 19, Yeshiva 3-- Queen of Angels won the Liberty League game at home to set up a showdown for second place Friday against Windward.
