High School Baseball : Top-Ranked Helix Wins Grossmont League Title

Helix High School won the Grossmont League baseball title with a 7-3 victory Friday at second-place Grossmont.

Top-ranked Helix (21-2 overall, 14-0 in league play) received solo home runs from Ricky Page, Rich Haar and Spike Mitchell, and Rick Navarro got the win in relief to improve his record to 11-0.

Freshman catcher Todd Cady had a two-run homer for Grossmont (15-9, 10-4) to tie the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning. Helix, however, added three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to clinch its first league title since 1982.

In other Grossmont League games:

El Capitan 10, Granite Hills 9 (8 innings)--Zak Salmon was balked home in the top of the eighth to provide El Capitan with the victory at Granite Hills. Shane Boyd was 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs for Granite Hills (14-10, 8-7). Ken Jarvis had a three-run double as El Capitan (9-14, 4-10) took a 9-8 lead in the seventh.

Santana 10, Monte Vista 2--Jason Cabral had a two-run home run and was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs to lead eighth-ranked Santana at home. Jeff Matranga (6-1) went the distance for the victory. Paul Newark was 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs for Santana (19-7, 9-5). Vern Mullis had a solo home run for Monte Vista (12-15, 5-9).

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Crawford 14, St. Augustine 1--Jeff Thrift did not allow an earned run in three innings of relief to earn the win and was 2 for 4 with an RBI as Crawford gained at least a tie for the Central League title.

San Diego 11, Lincoln 9--Dave Moore had a two-run homer and finished with three hits and five RBIs to lead San Diego (16-8, 8-6) at Lincoln. Daniel Hernandez hit a solo home run for Lincoln (3-19, 2-12).

AVOCADO LEAGUE

Rancho Buena Vista 4, Escondido 3--Robert McLeod allowed one earned run and had a two-run triple to lead Rancho Buena Vista (8-15, 4-8) at home. Escondido is 12-11 and 6-5.
