South Lake Tahoe High School was slapped with a fine and a warning because of a summertime trip planned by the school’s basketball team to Finland and the Soviet Union.

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Assn. approved a $250 fine and a 2-year warning, until 1990. South Lake Tahoe school trustees approved the team’s trip in March, then rescinded the approval last month after the NIAA said it violated a ban on summertime activities.

Association Chairman Bert Cooper requested the sanctions because he said approval should not have been given. Basketball Coach Tom Orlich reacted angrily to Monday’s action.

“We’re just being put under tremendous scrutiny because we have 11 championship banners hanging in our gym and nine of them say ‘Nevada,’ ” he said.

Orlich added that the team still plans to make its Aug. 1-10 trip to Finland and the Soviet Union.
