Southern Section Tennis Playoffs : Mission Viejo Wins 8 of 9 Doubles Sets to Surprise San Gorgonio, 12-6

Mission Viejo High School won eight of nine doubles sets to upset Citrus Belt League champion San Gorgonio, 12-6, Tuesday in the first round of the Southern Section 4-A tennis playoffs at San Gorgonio.

The doubles teams of Dave Allen-Ron Engle and Marc Harvey-Dung Tran swept their sets for Mission Viejo. Allen and Engle won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, and Harvey and Tran won, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

Billy Smith won three singles sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, for Mission Viejo (7-14).

San Gorgonio finishes the season 19-2.

In other 4-A matches:

Edison 15, Arcadia 3--Dave Moore swept his No. 1 singles matches, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, and Steve Arnott swept his No. 2 singles matches, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2, to lead the Chargers (18-2) at home.

El Toro 17, Santa Ana Valley 1--El Toro’s No. 1 doubles team of David Mosh and Tim Fitzgerald swept their doubles matches, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, improving their record to 66-9. No. 3 singles player Sean Beougher swept three sets for host El Toro (17-7). Santa Ana Valley finishes 13-6.

Servite 10, Nogales 8--Jeff Belloli swept in singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, and his brother Chris also swept, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, for Servite (15-1) at the Anaheim Tennis Center.

Fountain Valley 16, Bishop Amat 2--Errol Aksoy swept his singles sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for host Fountain Valley (17-3). The Barons won all nine doubles sets, led by the No. 1 team of Brain Winterstein and Colby Morita, who won, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1.

Canyon 15, Lakewood 3--Jason DeFalco swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and Ilkyung Choi swept at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, for Canyon (21-0), the fourth-seeded team. Jose Lynch and Brad Mills, swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, and John Nygren and Mike Le swept at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for Canyon.

In the 5-A division:

Newport Harbor 15, Redondo Beach 3--Junior Chris Rabbitt, the Sailors’ No. 1 singles player, swept his matches, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, to lead Newport Harbor’s sweep of the singles matches at home. Brothers Mike and Jamie Hardin, the No. 1 doubles team, won their matches, 7-6, 6-4, 6-1, for Newport Harbor (20-1).

Corona del Mar 13, Buena 5--Corona del Mar (13-8) swept in doubles for the victory at home. Scott and Rob Atkin, brothers who won the Sea View League doubles title, led the sweep, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Richard Ha and Doug Schulein won, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, and Jared Manion and Bob Etebar won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for Corona del Mar.

In the 3-A first round:

Notre Dame 9, El Dorado 9 (Notre Dame wins on games, 78-77)--El Dorado won 8 of 9 doubles sets, and Notre Dame won 8 of 9 singles sets at El Dorado. Cameron Carter and Tim Clement swept their sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, and Darin Hicks and Jeff Bailes swept, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, for El Dorado (11-6, 8-2).

Los Alamitos 17, Upland 1--Los Alamitos’ No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, Riva DaSilva and Shubert Koong, swept their singles matches to lead host Los Alamitos (19-2), which plays La Canada Friday in the second round.

La Canada 11, La Quinta 7--Brandt Lincoln and Jeremy Milbrodt won their singles sets for host La Canada (14-4). Lincoln swept, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0, and Milbrodt won, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0.

Woodbridge 14, Sonora 4--Randy Ivey swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host Woodbridge (18-3). Gabe Pate and Mark Alonso swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-1,6-3, 6-1, and Rajan Saggar and Brett Isaacman swept at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, for Woodbridge.

Laguna Beach 15, Cerritos 3--John Leach, playing at No. 1 singles, swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Laguna Beach (15-6) at home. Leach, a freshman, is 57-0 this season. Laguna Beach’s No. 1 doubles team of John Young and Lee Kirner also swept their sets.

Sunny Hills 16, Kennedy 2--Glenn Henderson won his three singles sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, to lead host Sunny Hills (17-5).

In the 2-A division:

Valencia 18, Ontario 0--Danny Yu swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, for host Valencia (19-2). Gerrod Van Engen and Charles Lee swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, for Valencia.

Victor Valley 12, Anaheim 6--Mike Euglow won his three sets, 6-1, 7-5, 7-5, to lead host Victor Valley (15-3). Dean Nguyen and Jack Kuei won two of three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1, for Anaheim (14-5).
