High School Softball Playoffs : Sylmar Opens Defense of Title With 7-4 Win

Christy Robbins’ two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning snapped a tie and propelled defending City Section 4-A Division champion Sylmar to a 7-4 victory over Poly in a quarterfinal game Thursday at Poly.

The victory sets up a rematch between Sylmar and El Camino Real in a semifinal at South Gate High on Thursday. Sylmar (13-7) defeated El Camino Real in last year’s City final.

Cindy Campbell led off the seventh with a triple and Robbins followed with her second home run of the season.

Two outs later, Katrina Vieane, Deann Wright and Monica Brown hit consecutive singles for the Spartans’ final run.

Wright allowed eight hits, struck out four and walked eight for a complete-game victory.

Vieane was 4 for 4 and scored a run for Sylmar (13-7). Campbell hit a triple and a home run, and Robbins had a double in addition to the home run.

Poly finished with a 15-2 record.

In other City 4-A quarterfinal games:

El Camino Real 6, Banning 1--Lisa Huffaker hit a two-run home run in the second inning to key a five-run rally at El Camino Real.

Beth Silverman threw a three-hitter and also tripled and scored on Jenny Fleming’s fly to center in the second. Silverman (16-4) struck out eight for the Conquistadores (20-4).

Chatsworth 4, Narbonne 1--Stephanie Ellis tripled home two runs and Christina Roopenian tossed a two-hitter for Chatsworth at home.

The Chancellors rallied for three in the fourth inning to snap a 1-1 tie. Following two singles, Latoya Williams doubled home a run before Ellis tripled.

Roopenian (15-2) struck out eight. The Chancellors play San Pedro, a 3-1 winner over San Fernando, in a semifinal game Thursday.

SOUTHERN SECTION 4-A DIVISION

Newbury Park 2, Santa Barbara 0--Sophomore Lea Lopez pitched a one-hitter, struck out 13 and walked one in the first-round game at Santa Barbara.

Lopez (10-4) gave up her only hit, a bunt single, to Faha Banks in the first inning.

Beth Calcante scored the only run Lopez would need in the second inning on a Laree Reynolds squeeze bunt. Calcante opened the inning with a single and went to third on Chris Singer’s bunt single.

Calcante, who was 2 for 3, also scored on a single by Jenette Sanchez in the sixth.

Newbury Park (19-8-1) plays Righetti, a 9-2 winner over Burbank, Tuesday in the second round.

Simi Valley 8, Los Alamitos 3--Chrissy Oliver threw a four-hitter and helped her cause with a three-run double in the first-round game at Simi Valley.

With Los Alamitos leading, 3-2, Oliver cleared the bases in the fifth to put the Pioneers ahead.

Oliver (19-7) also scored two runs and struck out seven in going the distance. Kim Bennett was 3 for 3 with a run batted in.

Simi Valley (20-8) plays Buena in the second round.

Hart 2, Cerritos 0--Danielle Wood’s two-run single supplied Hart with all the runs it needed in the first-round game at Hart.

Wood singled with the bases loaded in the second inning as Hart rallied for two runs on four consecutive singles with two outs.

Sophomore right-hander Kym Weil pitched a two-hitter and struck out 13 to give her 239 strikeouts in 154 innings. Weil (21-4) has won 11 consecutive games and recorded all but one of Hart’s victories.

1-A DIVISION

La Reina 21, Maranatha 1--Sherri Sisco, a sophomore right-hander, threw her third no-hitter in 11 days, walking two and striking out 13 in a first-round game at La Reina.

La Reina exploded for 12 runs in the fourth inning. Christa Grenat was 4 for 5 with four RBIs, Stefanie Derington scored four runs and was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Erin Sweeney was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Carolyn Russo was 3 for 5 with two RBIs.

Cabrillo 4, Agoura 1--The Conquistadores scored four runs in the sixth inning on one hit and two Charger errors at Cabrillo. Michelle Bunch and Jill Hartwig had the only hits for Agoura (14-8).

SMALL SCHOOLS DIVISION

L.A. Lutheran 7, Linfield 4--Mary Lopez was 3 for 3 and Mickey Lehmkuhl pitched a six-hitter for L. A. Lutheran at Linfield.

Flintridge Sacred Heart 13, Oakwood 1--Janelle Campbell tossed a two-hitter and struck out seven at Flintridge Sacred Heart.
