Helix’s Navarro Gets Partial Aid to Play at SDSU

Left-hander Rick Navarro, who led Helix High to the San Diego Section 3-A baseball title last week, has accepted a partial scholarship to play at San Diego State, SDSU Coach Jim Dietz said.

Navarro was 14-0 and had a 1.29 earned-run average in 97 innings this season. He pitched six shutouts and had a county-leading 136 strikeouts.

Navarro said he was interested in staying in San Diego County and would have gone to Grossmont College if it were not for the offer from SDSU. He was not drafted during the recent major league free agent draft.

“I think my size is the biggest reason,” said Navarro, who is 5-feet 8-inches tall.

Dwayne Wilson of Oceanside High was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers, Oceanside Coach Dave Barrett said. Wilson played mostly first base this season, but he was drafted as an outfielder. He batted .306 and stole 13 bases after stealing 25 in 16 games as a junior.

Tom Phanco of the Bishop’s School, who recently won the San Diego Section singles title, has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Miami.

Phanco is ranked third in Southern California among players 18 and under.

Phanco chose Miami over UCLA, UC Irvine, the University of San Diego, Duke, Georgia Tech and Colorado.
