American Legion Baseball : Camarillo Pours It On in 13-2 Win

Share

It has not rained in weeks, the ground is rock hard and the infield grass is turning brown. But officially, Wednesday’s game between Camarillo and Conejo was rained out, smack dab in the middle of the worst drought in years.

With Camarillo batting in the bottom of the fourth, the sprinklers at Rio Mesa High came on and washed away the final three innings of play. Because Camarillo was leading, 13-2, at the time, Conejo agreed to accept the District 16 game as a loss. Eventually.

“At first they wanted to wait and play when the sprinklers went off,” Camarillo Coach Rich Herrera said. “There was just no way we could play, it was a total mess. I guess it goes down as a rain-out.”

Right-hander Steve Biggs (5-1) threw a two-hitter, striking out three and walking three for Camarillo, which improved to 10-0 in district play and 13-2 overall. John Swanson was 3 for 3 and had 2 doubles and 2 runs batted in.

Woodland Hills (West) 9, Woodland Hills (East) 7--Trailing, 7-6, West scored three runs on four consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The victory gave West (14-2) a two-game lead over Chatsworth in the Western Division. Dan McAdoo, Ryan McGuire, Gene Demyon and Del Marine had consecutive singles in the sixth to give West an 8-7 lead. Pat Treend’s sacrifice fly scored Demyon for West’s final run.

David Anzivino and Danny Glassman each had two hits and two RBIs for East (9-7).

Reseda 9, West Hills 1--After his defense let him down in several previous outings, right-hander James Purse (1-3) threw a three-hitter and struck out 12.

“He must have the best ERA of any pitcher on the team,” Coach Frank DesEnfants said. “But his record doesn’t show it. His last time out I think we made eight errors behind him.”

Mike Shwartzer was 4 for 4, and Kevin Ogle and Donnie Grant homered for Reseda (9-8).

Sun Valley 2, Valley (ET) 0--Right-handers Mario Gomez and Eddie Chavez combined on a five-hitter to lead Sun Valley (7-8).

Chavez recorded his second save by escaping a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh. With one out, Chavez retired the final two batters on fly balls. Chavez also had the game-winning RBI with a third-inning triple. Adulfo Hernandez then drove in Chavez with a single.

Sepulveda 9, Reseda-Cleveland 8--Short on pitching, Sepulveda somehow survived with catcher Adam Clark. Clark, who had pitched only three innings this season, stranded runners at second and third in the top of the seventh to earn a complete-game victory. Clark struck out seven and walked six. Joe Cascione was 2 for 3 with three RBIs for Sepulveda (8-8).

Mission Hills 4, San Fernando 3--Shortstop Bobby Corrales’ ninth-inning throwing error gave Mission Hills the victory.

Mission Hills (9-8) had loaded the bases on a walk to Jeff Ordona and consecutive singles by Greg Thompson and Scott Goldsmith. Pat Van Puyuelde followed with a grounder to Corrales, who threw the ball to the backstop trying to force Ordona at home.

Tom Daniels (3-3) gave up five hits, struck out seven and walked three.

Granada Hills 8, Studio City 5--Outfielder Craig Fleck hit a grand slam in the third to give Granada Hills a decisive 7-4 lead.

Shawn Madden had an RBI triple and right-hander Mitch Cizek (2-3) pitched his fifth complete-game, a nine-hitter, with six strikeouts and two walks.
