3 Western States Represented in American Legion Classic

Eight American Legion teams from three states will begin play today in the Gene Waid Memorial Baseball Classic at Rio Mesa High.

The tournament, hosted by the Camarillo entry, features two teams from Arizona, one from Colorado, three from Ventura County and one from Culver City.

Each team will play one game today, Saturday and Sunday. Teams with the best overall record in each bracket will meet in the championship game at 3 p.m. Monday. Camarillo (13-2 overall) is the defending champion. All games will be played at Rio Mesa.

Ventura opens at 9 this morning against Westlake in a bracket-A game, followed by Cherry Creek (Colo.) against the Scottsdale (Ariz.) A’s at 11:30. In bracket B, Camarillo faces Royal at 2 p.m. and Culver City plays Scottsdale (Ariz.) Honda at 4:30.

In bracket B on Saturday, Royal plays Scottsdale Honda at 9 a.m. and Camarillo faces Culver City at 11:30. In bracket A, Cherry Creek plays Ventura at 2 p.m. and the Scottsdale A’s play Westlake at 4:30.

In bracket A on Sunday, Ventura faces the Scottsdale A’s at 9 a.m. and Cherry Creek plays Westlake at 11:30. In bracket B, Camarillo plays Scottsdale Honda at 2 p.m., followed by Culver City and Royal at 4:30.
