Mater Dei Heads Basketball Field in Servite Tournament

Defending champion Mater Dei High School heads a field of 16 basketball teams that will compete in the Servite summer tournament, beginning Thursday in the Friars’ gymnasium.
Mater Dei’s summer squad includes 6-foot 10-inch sophomore Mark Moneypenny, 6-9 junior Derek Stone and 6-7 junior Charlie Andres. Other top teams scheduled to compete include Lakewood, Capistrano Valley and Rolling Hills.
Among the top players scheduled to participate are forward John Hardy of Rolling Hills, center Cherokee Parks of Marina, forward Scott McCorkle of Capistrano Valley, forward Todd Norman of Ocean View, forwards Victor and Brian Camper of Lakewood, center Greg Willig of St. Paul and guard Dijon Bernard of Dominguez.
The tournament will conclude Sunday with the championship game, scheduled for 6 p.m.
The first-round pairings:
Thursday: 3 p.m.--St. Paul vs. Westminster; 4:30--West Covina vs. Lakewood; 6--Ocean View vs. Los Alamitos; 7:30--Dominguez vs. Mater Dei.
Friday: 9 a.m.--Capistrano Valley vs. Fountain Valley; 10:30--Servite vs. Charter Oak; noon--Rolling Hills vs. Marina; 1:30 p.m.--St. Monica vs. Long Beach Poly.
