Curren to Meet Australians for Surfing Title

Tom Curren of Santa Barbara will try to win his third consecutive Stubbies Pro International Surfing event this morning at Oceanside, but he will have to get past three Australians to do it.

Curren will meet Damien Hardman, who kept Curren from winning a third consecutive world title last year, in a semifinal this morning at 7 a.m. Australians Glen Winton and Simon Law will meet in the other semifinal.

In the women’s semifinals at 7 a.m., defending world champion Wendy Botha of Australia will meet Jolene Smith of San Clemente and three-time world champion Freida Zamba of Florida will face Kim Dearin of Carpinteria. The finals are scheduled for 11 a.m.

TENNIS

Top-seeded Lori McNeil has withdrawn from the $100,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego tennis tournament because of a knee injury. The tournament runs Monday through Saturday at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.

McNeil, ranked ninth in the world, was coming off a victory in the Virginia Slims of Newport. Patty Fendick replaced McNeil as the top seed.

TRACK AND FIELD

Roger DePriest and Angela Kimmey were double winners at the San Diego Track Club All-Comers meet at Balboa Stadium Saturday.

DePriest won the 800 meters (1:58.34) and the 1,500 meters (4:00.27), and Kimmey won the 100 meters (12.78) and 200 meters (26.22).

BASKETBALL

Reggie Jordan scored 30 points and Marlin Maxey added 22 to lead Nice Advice to a 99-97 victory over defending champion The Crown in a Supreme Court Pro-Am League men’s basketball game at the Memorial Recreation Center Saturday.

The victory created a three-way tie for first at 4-1 among Nice Advice, The Crown and Courageous Endurance, which defeated The Truth, 101-83, behind Jonath Nicholas’ 37 points.

Dee Dee Duncan scored 33 points to lead Justice For All (4-1) to a 75-69 victory over Awesome Image in a women’s game.

Games will be played today at noon, 1:15 and 2:45 p.m. Admission is free.
