Recreation : Eagle Rock Athletic Club to Play Host to Statewide 7-Man Rugby Tournament

The Eagle Rock Athletic Club, the oldest rugby club in Southern California, will play host to more than 30 teams statewide Saturday in the eighth edition of a seven-man rugby tournament at the Rose Bowl.

The tournament kicks off a seven-man rugby league that runs during August and September as a prelude to the 15-man season, which runs from October through April. League games are held at several sites in the Valley, including Balboa Park and the Hjelte Sports Center in Encino.

Players from throughout the San Fernando Valley form the Eagle Rock team.

Softball: The Last Chance Liberty team won the B minor division in the City fast-pitch softball championships at the Hjelte Sports Center.

Eighteen teams from throughout the Valley competed in the three-day tournament conducted by the Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department.

Malibu, the only team to go undefeated, won the B division. Don Morgan of Malibu was the division’s most valuable player.

Frank Diresta, the most valuable player in the B minor division, led the Last Chance Liberty team to a 4-1 record. The Naturals and Muff tied for second in the division at 3-2.

More than 200 teams from nine divisions and 150 leagues have competed this month at sites throughout the Valley in the City parks and recreation department’s slow-pitch tournament. The championships of the single-elimination tournament are scheduled for tonight at Balboa Park beginning at 7:30 p.m. Information: 818-783-0738.

Shoot-out: The Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles on Saturday will stage a Junior Olympic archery tournament at the Woodley Park archery range.

Medals will be awarded for the top three places in each division. Youths aged 11-17 are eligible to compete in the tournament, which starts at 9:30 a.m.
