John Sayers, a starting forward for the University of San Diego basketball team last season and the 1988 West Coast Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, has decided not to return to the school.

Sayers, who went to high school in San Jose, said he intends to enroll at California for the second semester this school year.

“In high school, I wanted to go to a UC school--Cal or UCLA,” Sayers said. “But I didn’t get recruited by them, so I thought USD would be the place for me. (Transferring) is something I felt I needed to do.”

Jerry Markray, a 6-8 sophomore forward from Moorpark College, has transferred to San Diego State, Coach Jim Brandenburg said. Markray will redshirt this season for academic reasons.
