Late Goal Gives USD Soccer Victory
Trong Ngyuen scored with 48 seconds left to give the University of San Diego men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over Point Loma Nazarene College Wednesday at USD. USD (3-3) outshot PLNC (5-1), 15-6.
Ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III poll, UC San Diego defeated Division I UC Irvine, 2-0, in La Jolla. Scott Goodman scored on a first-half corner kick that caromed off the goalie’s hand into the net. Scott Rommel also scored for UCSD (5-0-1).
UC Santa Barbara’s Chris John scored the only goal as the host Gauchos (5-2) defeated U.S. International University, 1-0. Oscar Rodriguez had 9 saves for USIU (1-5).
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Katy Dulock scored four goals, and junior goalie Julie Freiss recorded her sixth consecutive shutout as host UC San Diego beat Occidental, 7-0. UCSD is 7-0 and ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III.
SURFING
Carlsbad’s Mike Lambresi, the defending U.S. champion and 1988 points leader on the Professional Surfing Assn. of America tour, heads a field of 150 surfers in the $17,000 Budweiser San Diego Classic today through Sunday at the Ocean Beach pier.
In bodyboarding, Hawaiians Mike Stewart (No. 1 in 1988 points), Ben Severson (No. 2) and Kevin Cerv (No. 7) of Leucadia lead a field of 40 competing for $3,000. Competition begins each day at 6:30 a.m., with the finals tentatively scheduled for noon Sunday.
Kiersten Taub had 2 goals in UC Santa Barbara’s 3-0 victory over U.S. International (3-2).Jennifer Swanson had 10 saves for USIU.
