Reseda Earns Shutout Over Chatsworth

You can move Reseda High up a division. You can take away its All-City running back. But the Regents are still the Regents.

Reseda, which moved from the City Section 2-A Division to the 3-A this season, notched its first shutout Friday, defeating Chatsworth, 23-0, at Reseda.

The Regents (2-0) accomplished the win with a stifling defense reminiscent of years past and a running back reminiscent of last year’s All-City performer, Ronald Wilkinson.

Senior tailback William Gaines rushed for 147 yards in 12 carries and scored on a 61-yard run. Gaines also caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Coley Kyman.

The Reseda defense, led by linebacker Aaron Brumfield (3 sacks) and tackle Earl Negrete, held Chatsworth to 144 yards and just 36 yards rushing.

Chatsworth (0-2) made only 4 first downs.

“The defense was just outstanding tonight,” Reseda Coach Joel Schaeffer said. “I don’t believe in this 2-A, 3-A stuff. It’s a very close thing between the 2-A, 3-A and 4-A. The best team wins.”

The Reseda defense smothered Chatsworth in the first half, holding the Chancellors to 49 yards and a solitary first down.

The Regents, meanwhile, piled up 189 first-half yards, even though their offense failed to score a touchdown.

Reseda’s only touchdown of the half came when Henry Ray fielded a punt at his own 46, broke a tackle at the Chatsworth 40, then cut back across the field to score. Joe Arnold’s kick put the Regents ahead, 7-0, with 4:15 left in the first period.

Arnold made it 10-0 with 22 seconds left in the half when he booted a 23-yard field goal.
