A 22-yard field goal by Jerry Garrett with 5 seconds left gave Oceanside High School a 15-13 victory over Capistrano Valley in a nonleague game at Oceanside Friday in front of about 2,000.
Garrett’s kick capped a furious 10-play, 66-yard drive for the Pirates (3-0) that started with 2:08 left. That drive came after Capistrano Valley took a 13-12 lead on a 1-yard run by Mike Mosebrook. The two-point conversion attempt by Capistrano Valley failed and Oceanside then began its winning drive.
The Cougars (1-2) trailed, 12-0, at halftime before Mosebrook’s five-yard run in the third quarter made the score, 12-7. That score was set up when Capistrano Valley’s Scott Carpenter recovered an Oceanside fumble on the Oceanside 16.
Oceanside’s first two scores came on a 14-yard run by Garrett in the first quarter and a 5-yard run by Sherman Crane. Conversion attempts after both scores failed.
Capistrano Valley held Garrett to 21 yards passing on only 2 completions. But he gained 102 yards rushing on 11 carries, including a 32-yard run that helped set up Oceanside’s winning score.
