Senior running back Anthony Brown, a transfer from Pittsburgh, and option quarterback Major Harris, who grew up 5 minutes from Pitt Stadium, led 11th-ranked West Virginia to a 31-10 victory over the 16th-ranked Panthers Saturday.

Brown, who left Pitt during his sophomore season in 1985 because he wasn’t playing enough, ran for 110 yards and a touchdown in 17 carries for the Mountaineers (4-0). Harris, who turned down a Pitt scholarship offer because the coaches wanted him to play defense, ran 10 times for 55 yards and completed 5 of 12 passes for 61 yards and a touchdown.

On West Virginia’s third possession, Harris ran 38 yards on a bootleg on third and 25 to set up the Mountaineers’ first touchdown--a 33-yard pass play, Harris to Reggie Rembert.

Pitt (2-1) held West Virginia to 23 points under its nation’s-leading 54-point average, but the Mountaineers limited Adam Walker--averaging 165 yards a game--to a season-low 39 yards in 17 carries.

Brown, who ran for 105 yards for Pitt in a 10-10 tie against West Virginia in 1985, burst 64 yards up the middle on a draw play with 10:23 left in the third quarter, making it 17-7.
