Prep Football : Roundup : Tustin Upsets Sunny Hills in Water Polo, 11-10

Jay Warren scored 5 goals as Tustin High School upset Sunny Hills, 11-10, Friday in the quarterfinals of the South Coast water polo tournament at Tustin.

The victory moves Tustin into the semifinals against Villa Park today at 10 a.m. at Newport Harbor High School.

Sunny Hills entered the tournament as the No. 1-ranked team in the Southern Section 4-A division.

The Tillers (6-1) led, 7-4, at halftime and 9-6 after 3 periods.

Sunny Hills tied the score, 10-10, in the fourth period, but Chris Mercurio scored with 1 minute 30 seconds left to give the Tillers the lead.

“Like any No. 1-ranked team, Sunny Hills came roaring back,” Tustin Coach Boyd Philpot said. “But, we held on by the skin of our teeth.”

Goalie Erik Grove made 8 saves to preserve the victory, including 2 on penalty shots in the second half.

Peter Herman and John Billings each scored 2 goals for the Tillers.

In other quarterfinal matches:

Villa Park 5, Newport Harbor 1--Gavin Arroyo scored 3 goals to lead the Spartans at Newport Harbor. Villa Park built a 3-1 halftime lead and then shut out the Sailors (4-1) in the second half.

Foothill 10, El Dorado 5--Adam Musch scored 4 goals and Craig Stewart 3 to lead Foothill (9-0) at El Dorado. Greg Milton scored 3 goals for El Dorado (2-1).

In second-round games at Newport Harbor:

Newport Harbor 12, Edison 8--Jason Phillips scored 4 goals in the second half as the Sailors broke a 5-5 halftime tie in a second-round game.

Villa Park 9, Downey 1--The Spartans shut out Downey in the first half for a 4-0 lead.

In second-round games at El Dorado High School:

El Dorado 10, Mission Viejo 6--Kyle Utsumi scored 3 goals to lead El Dorado. Matt McClear and Matt Svoboda each scored 2 goals for the Golden Hawks.

Foothill 13, San Luis Obispo 4--The Knights opened a 9-2 lead at El Dorado. Brian Costanza scored 3 goals for Foothill.

In nonleague water polo:

Valencia 19, Trabuco Hills 1--Charlie Amoroso, Jeff Myers and Mickey Doi scored 4 goals each for host Valencia (2-1).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis:

Laguna Hills 12, Woodbridge 6--Brooke Fleming and Noriko Hopkins swept their singles sets to lead host Laguna Hills. Fleming, the Hawks’ No. 1 singles player, won her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. Hopkins won, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Corona del Mar 14, Santa Barbara 4--Keri Phillips swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Corona del Mar (6-0) at Santa Barbara. Phebus is 18-0 on the season, winning 17 of those sets by 6-0 scores.
