An official scoring change has given Boston Red Sox outfielder Mike Greenwell the American League record for most game-winning runs batted in in a season.
The first run of Boston’s 12-0 victory over Cleveland Thursday night was scored in the third inning as Greenwell grounded to Indian first baseman Terry Francona. Jody Reed scored as the ball glanced off the glove of a lunging Francona. Official scorer Fred Heyer initially charged Francona with an error but reversed his decision before Friday night’s game.
Greenwell was credited with his 23rd game-winning RBI of the season, breaking the record set by Harold Baines of the Chicago White Sox in 1983.
