Southland Roundup : Northridge Is Beaten by Cal Poly SLO

Todd Henderson scored 2 touchdowns as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo overpowered previously unbeaten Cal State Northridge, 38-7, in a Western Football Conference game Saturday night at Northridge.

The Matadors are now 4-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Mustangs (2-2, 1-1) put the game away by scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter.

UC Santa Barbara 27, Cal Lutheran 7--Cal Lutheran’s Jim Bees threw 3 interceptions and the Kingsmen committed 8 turnovers as the Gauchos (3-1) won a nonconference game at Thousand Oaks. Cal Lutheran is 2-2.

Humboldt State 13, Azusa Pacific 12--Phillip Humphreys intercepted Brian Hunt’s pass at the Humboldt 19-yard line with 21 seconds left as the Lumberjacks (2-1) held on to win at Arcata. Paul Weinecke scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run with 12:19 remaining. Azusa Pacific’s Hunt was 16 of 24 for 166 yards, but threw 4 interceptions. The Cougars are 2-1.

Whittier 50, Claremont-Mudd 21--Sophmore quarterback Mike Haney threw 4 touchdown passes, 3 to receiver Ian Yates, leading the Poets (2-1, 2-0) to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at Claremont. The Stags (0-3, 0-2) were led by Reed Pangborn, who had 21 carries for 101 yards and 1 touchdown.

Pomona-Pitzer 23, Cal Poly Pomona 16--John Parker rushed for 100 yards in 12 carries and scored 1 touchdown to lead the Sagehens (1-2) at Claremont. Quarterback Greg Silver scored on a 1-yard run and connected with Gary Lancina on a 72-yard touchdown pass play. The Broncos are 2-1.

Menlo 24, La Verne 0--Wide receiver Scott DeSilva, filling in at quarterback for the injured Greg Clark, threw 2 touchdown passes and ran for 1 as Menlo (2-2) defeated La Verne (0-3) in a nonconference game at Menlo Park. DeSilva, who was 10 of 22 for 147 yards, rushed 7 times for 49 yards.
