East Roundup : No. 7 West Virginia Beats East Carolina

Reserve tailback Undra Johnson rushed for 167 yards in 25 carries and scored 2 touchdowns as seventh-ranked West Virginia defeated East Carolina, 30-10, at Greenville, N.C.

The Mountaineers raised their record to 6-0, their best start since 1983, while the Pirates (1-5) dropped their fifth straight.

The Mountaineers led, 17-10, and were struggling late in the third quarter when Johnson scored his second touchdown on a 26-yard run. Johnson entered the game after starter Anthony Brown pulled a hamstring early in the game and did not return.

West Virginia Coach Don Nehlen said: “It’s a big win. Getting the third win on the road in a row, and them all coming in places that are not easy to play in, I’d say we feel very fortunate.”

Penn State 35, Cincinnati 9--Freshman Tony Sacca passed for 2 touchdowns, and Michael Timpson returned a punt 64 yards for another as the Nittany Lions beat the Bearcats at University Park, Pa.

Cincinnati (2-3) had only 94 yards rushing and 110 passing. Penn State (4-1) had 6 sacks, recovered a fumble and intercepted 2 passes, both converted into touchdowns.

Syracuse 34, Rutgers 20--Todd Philcox completed 19 of 27 passes for 268 yards and threw 4 touchdown passes, including 3 to sophomore Rob Moore as the Orangemen used their ball control offense to grind out a victory at Syracuse, N.Y.

Syracuse overcame 2 lost fumbles and an interception to raise its record to 4-1 and drop the Scarlet Knights to 3-2.

Penn 10, Brown 0--Bryan Keys ran for 126 yards in 28 carries and scored the game’s only touchdown on a 5-yard run as the Quakers (4-0, 3-0) won in a cold rain at Providence, R.I., to take over sole possession of first place in the Ivy League. Brown slipped to 0-3-1 and 0-2-1.

Cornell 19, Harvard 17--Scott Malaga scored twice on short runs, and the Big Red converted 2 safeties in the fourth quarter to win an Ivy League game at Cambridge, Mass.

Trailing, 17-7, Cornell (2-2, 1-1) scored 12 points in the fourth quarter. A bad snap on a punting attempt gave the Big Red a safety when Hall had to fall on the ball in the end zone. After Malaga’s second touchdown and a 2-point conversion on a pass from Chris Cochrane to Sam Brickley, another punt attempt by Harvard failed on a bad snap from center, giving Cornell another safety after Hall got to the ball and kicked it out of bounds.

Harvard is 2-2 and 1-1.

Holy Cross 17, Dartmouth 3--Fullback Joe Segreti rushed for 159 yards in 32 carries, and defensive back Julio Fernandez intercepted a deflected pass and ran 11 yards for a touchdown as the Crusaders (4-2) won the nonconference game at Worcester, Mass.

Holy Cross has 8 straight victories over Ivy League teams. Dartmouth is 1-3.

Army 33, Yale 18--Mike Mayweather ran for 155 yards and a touchdown as the Cadets (4-1) rolled up 425 rushing yards in beating the Bulldogs (0-3-1) at New Haven, Conn.

Lehigh 24, Colgate 19--Tailback Erick Torain scored 2 touchdowns, and quarterback Mark McGowan ran for a 2-yard touchdown to give the Engineers a Colonial League victory over the Red Raiders at Bethlehem, Pa.

Lehigh is 4-1 and 2-0, Colgate 1-4 and 1-2.
