Southland Roundup : Kick With No Time Left Beats UC Santa Barbara

Harry Konstantinopoulos kicked a 52-yard field goal with no time remaining to lead Sonoma State to a 20-18 nonconference victory over UC Santa Barbara Saturday at Goleta.

The game-winner by Konstantinopoulos, who also had a 33-yard field goal, was set up by a 15-yard pass interference penalty that put the ball on the Gauchos’ 35-yard line.

Sophomore quarterback Mike Curtis was 30 of 49 for 302 yards, with touchdown passes of 9 and 8 yards, the latter going to Kevin King with 1:01 remaining.

Both teams are 3-2.

Cal State Northridge 24, Cal Lutheran 21--Sophomore tailback Albert Fann scored 2 touchdowns, including 1 on a 75-yard pass from Rob Huffman, leading the Matadors to a Western Football Conference victory at Thousand Oaks.

Fann, the game’s leading rusher with 62 yards, also scored on a 7-yard pass from Huffman as the Matadors improved to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference play.

Jim Bees threw 2 touchdown passes for Cal Lutheran (2-3, 0-1), a 14-yarder to wide receiver John Bankhead in the first quarter, and a 58-yard play to Bankhead in the fourth quarter.

Trinity (Tex.) 34, Claremont-Mudd 31--Duke Johnston’s 1-yard run with 1:01 remaining gave Trinity a come-from-behind victory over Claremont-Mudd at Claremont.

Claremont-Mudd quarterback Mike Pembroke completed 8 of 18 passes for 192 and 3 touchdowns passes.

Pembroke’s top receiver was Tim Bray, who caught 2 touchdown passes.

Claremont-Mudd led, 31-27, before Johnson’s game-winning score.

Trinity is 2-1, Claremont-Mudd 0-4.

U. San Diego 23, Pomona-Pitzer 7--Quarterback Doug Piper scored on an 11-yard run, connected with Dave Notoli on a 32-yard touchdown pass and kicked an extra point as the University of San Diego defeated Pomona-Pitzer in a nonconference game at Pomona.

Pomona scored in the first quarter on a 1-yard run by Greg Silver, but San Diego dominated the remainder of the game.

In the third quarter, San Diego’s Jim Morrison kicked a 22-yard field goal, and Charles Taumoepean scored in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run.

San Diego is 2-2, Pomona 1-3.

Occidental 19, La Verne 13--Occidental rallied to defeat winless La Verne at La Verne.

Reserve running back Kevin Vegas played a major role in Occidental’s comeback with a 66-yard run to set up George Conahey’s 10-yard touchdown run and his own 4-yard run.

Vargas gained 101 yards in 14 carries.

Occidental (3-1) limited La Verne (0-4) to 28 yards rushing.

Menlo 28, Redlands 0--Scott De Silva threw 2 touchdown passes to Mike Kahahawai, leading the Oaks past the Bulldogs in a nonconference game at Redlands.

Kahahawai, who finished with 4 receptions for 86 yards, caught touchdown passes of 39 and 18 yards. De Silva finished 10 of 18 for 145 yards.

Menlo, which held the Bulldogs to 176 total yards, is 3-2. Redlands is 2-2.

Azusa Pacific 18, Whittier 0--Azusa Pacific had 9 sacks in holding the Poets scoreless in a nonconference game at Whittier. Quarterback Brian Hunt led the Cougars offensively by throwing for a 23-yard touchdown pass and running for another. Hunt was 9 of 22 for 130 yards.

Azusa Pacific is 3-1. Whittier, which was held to minus 20 yards rushing, is 2-2.

Cal State Sacramento 30, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 29--Cal State Sacramento scored on Don Hair’s pass with 19 seconds left to come from behind and beat the Mustangs at San Luis Obispo. Quarterback Tony Trosin completed 17 of 29 passes for 210 yards as the Hornets evened their Western Football Conference record at 1-1, improving to 4-1 overall.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (1-2, 2-3) gained an early lead as Mustang quarterback Tom Sullivan threw a 33-yard touchdown to Terry Cole. Cole, who finished with 3 receptions for 124 yards, later caught an 80-yard touchdown pass in the losing effort.
