Valley Too Intense for Embattled Harbor

Share

Harbor College took the field Saturday night for its Western State Conference game against Valley minus two key elements.

The Seahawks were without assistant coach Jim True, who was suspended for 1 game after shoving team trainer David Lew last week in a 47-10 loss to Bakersfield.

They also lacked intensity.

In sum, that made Harbor easy pickings for Valley, which raced to a 21-6 halftime advantage and never looked back en route to a 30-20 victory at Harbor.

Valley’s Jim Harper, a freshman kicker from Hart High, broke his own school record with a 60-yard field goal in the second quarter. Harper, who also converted field goals of 34 and 23 yards, was hardly intimidated by the length of the kick.

“He moved the tee back to make it right at 60,” Valley Coach Chuck Ferrero said of Harper.

Roman Carter, who rushed for 45 yards in 14 carries, scored on a 6-yard run with 10:35 left in the second quarter to give Valley a 14-6 lead.

Carter scored again on a 1-yard run with 56 seconds left in the half as Valley took a 21-6 lead.

Valley took a 30-14 lead in the fourth quarter when Jomo Gordon scored on a 1-yard run after defensive lineman David Breuniger intercepted a Harbor pass.
