SportsScope : Corsairs Gridders Will Try for 3 in a Row

The Santa Monica College football team, 2-2 overall and winner of its last two games, will play host to Los Angeles Southwest (2-2) in a homecoming game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Corsair Field.

Last week Coach Ralph Vidal’s Corsairs broke a 7-game losing streak on the road that dated to 1986, defeating Santa Barbara City College, 21-14. SMC halfback Deon Thomas carried 19 times for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a game-winning 8-yard run. Fabian Pope had three receptions for 54 yards.

The nationally top-ranked UCLA women’s volleyball team, 13-0 overall and 6-0 in the Pacific 10 Conference as the week began, will entertain Washington State at 7 p.m. Friday and No. 14 Washington at 7 p.m. Saturday at John Wooden Center.

Junior middle blocker Daiva Tomkus leads the Bruins with 165 kills, 24 service aces, 54 blocks and a .417 hitting average. Freshman middle blocker Elaine Youngs has 155 kills, 13 aces, 48 blocks and a .334 hitting average.

The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team, 5-9 overall and 3-0 in the West Coast Athletic Conference at the start of the week, will play a conference match at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the University of San Diego and play host to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The Waves will play at 8 p.m. Wednesday at San Diego State.

Junior outside hitter Tami Seidenberg, the conference player of the week, leads the Waves with 169 kills and 138 digs.

The UCLA men’s soccer team (7-4-1), which swept road matches against Stanford and California last weekend, will play host to Loyola Marymount (2-5-3) at 3 p.m. today and to the University of San Francisco (9-3-1) at 2 p.m. Sunday at North Soccer Field.

In a 1-0 defeat of the Cardinal last week, Bill Thompson scored the only goal on an assist from Steve Black. The Bruins defeated Cal, 3-0, on goals by Thompson, Ray Fernandez and John Purzycki.

The No. 13 Pepperdine water polo team (4-5 overall and 0-1 in the Big West Conference) will play host to No. 9 UC Santa Barbara at 3 p.m. Friday and play road matches at No. 7 University of the Pacific on Saturday and No. 8 Fresno State on Sunday.

Junior Rob Sutter has 22 goals and senior Tucker Johnston has scored 15 to lead the Waves.

The UCLA women’s cross-country team will compete Saturday in the Cal State Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational. Last week the Bruin B-team won the Cal State Northridge Invitational with 55 points. UCLA senior Kathleen Hopkins finished sixth and senior Nancy Brown was seventh.

The Pepperdine men’s golf team will compete today through Saturday in the Pepsi tournament in Las Cruces, N.M. Last week the Waves opened the season by finishing ninth in the Southwestern Invitational, which was won by Texas El Paso. Pepperdine’s Kevin Eden and Steve Van Alstyne missed the tournament because of illness. Wave sophomore Dean Kobane was ninth with a 223 for 54 holes.

The UCLA women’s golf team will open the season Friday through Sunday in the Tulsa Invitational.
