Noriega Advances in Tennis Event

University of San Diego freshman Jose Luis Noriega defeated Mert Ertunga of Alabama Birmingham, 6-2, 7-5, Monday to advance into the main draw of the Volvo Collegiate Tennis Championships at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.

Noriega, of Lima, Peru, was down, 4-1, in the second set but rallied. He meets third-seeded Mihnea Nastase--the nephew of Ilie Nastase--of Mississippi State in a first-round main draw match Tuesday morning.

SOCCER

The UC San Diego men’s team defeated host Point Loma Nazarene College, 2-0, in a nonleague match. Mike Bradley and Wallace Whittier scored goals.

VOLLEYBALL

The University of San Diego women’s team defeated visiting Pennsylvania, 15-9, 15-3, 16-14 in a nonleague game. USD is 7-10. Penn is 8-10.

Angie Rais led the Toreros with 15 kills and Jody Connors added 11. Ruth Bajo had 12 digs and Teresa Myers had 27 assists.
