Prep Roundup : Tustin’s Defense in Second Half Helps Defeat Newport Harbor, 6-5

Tustin High School upset water polo power Newport Harbor, 6-5, in a Sea View League match Wednesday at Tustin.

Tustin, (14-5 overall, 3-0 in league matches) and ranked eighth in the Southern Section 4-A, got 2 goals each from Jay Warren and Mike Carter.

Newport Harbor has won 10 Southern Section 4-A championships since 1967 and came into the match ranked fifth in 4-A.

Tight second-half defense from the Tillers and goalie Erik Grove (13 saves) made the difference in the match, Tustin Coach Tony Choquehuanca said. “Erik was knocking away just about every shot,” Choquehuanca said.

Carter scored with 5 minutes 4 seconds remaining to give Tustin a 2-goal lead. The Tillers are tied for first-place in the Sea View League with Corona del Mar.

In Sunset League water polo:

Marina 11, Edison 9--In a battle of the two undefeated teams in league play, Jeoff Kagy led Marina (13-10, 3-0) with 7 goals in the match at Golden West College. Edison is 2-1 in league play.

Fountain Valley 17, Westminster 6--Trey Best and Ralph Grant each scored 4 goals, and Bryan Frieden and Ken Tenace scored 3 goals each for the Barons (12-9, 2-1) at Golden West College.

In Orange League water polo:

Brea Olinda 15, Magnolia 14--Ray Schwenjel scored in sudden death to give Brea (10-11, 3-2) the victory at home. Schwenjel was the leading scorer with 8 goals. Magnolia is 4-1 in league play.

Valencia 17, Western 6--Charlie Amoroso and Jess Myers scored 5 goals each, and John Myers added 3 for Valencia (12-5, 4-1) in a match at Valencia.

In Empire League water polo:

Cypress 19, Loara 7--Senior Kevin Keough scored 6 goals and four other Cypress players contributed 2 goals each to lead Cypress (16-5, 2-1) to victory over host Loara (0-3). Cypress goalie John Panagos, a sophomore, had 8 saves.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis:

Laguna Hills 17, Costa Mesa 1--Laguna Hill’s No. 1 singles player, Jenny Marques, raised her record to 42-0 sweeping her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 in a match at Laguna Hills. Teammate Brook Fleming won 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 to raise her record to 47-1.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ volleyball:

Laguna Hills 3, Orange 2--Middle blocker Christy Stoeckel had 35 kills, 7 stuff blocks and 6 aces to help Laguna Hills (4-7, 2-3) defeat Orange, 15-6, 15-4, 13-5, 16-18, 15-7, in a match at Laguna Hills. Orange is 1-4 in league play.
