Bonita Vista 28, Mar Vista 16--John Funke carried 20 times for 139 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead visiting Bonita Vista (4-3, 3-1). Bonita Vista’s Mike Barnett completed 5 of 7 for 70 yards. Mar Vista fell to 2-5, 0-4.

Sweetwater 22, Montgomery 0--David Gibson had 65 yards and 1 touchdown on 12 carries and and Javier Hernandez had 2 interceptions to lead Sweetwater (3-4, 3-1). Sweetwater had 224 yards total offense to 111 for Montgomery (1-6, 1-3). Hernandez has 5 interceptions this season.

Rancho Buena Vista 26, El Camino 21--Scott Garcia scored on a 5-yard run with 1:15 left in the game to cap a 3-minute, 98-yard drive that gave top-ranked Rancho Buena Vista the win at Vista High. RBV (4-0, 7-0) scored with 9 minutes left in the game to cut the lead to 21-20, but a two-point conversion attempt failed. El Camino (2-2, 5-2) used the final 1:15 to drive to the RBV 18-yard line, but quarterback Eric Robinson was sacked as time ran out.

Carlsbad 8, San Pasqual 0--Jason Macedo rushed for 99 yards on 14 carries and scored the only touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run in the third quarter as host Carlsbad (5-2, 2-2) surprised No. 6-ranked San Pasqual (5-2, 3-1). Carlsbad forced 3 turnovers, the last coming with 2 minutes left when Tim Yates intercepted a pass at the Carlsbad 1-yard line.

Oceanside 27, Ramona 14--Jerry Garrett passed for 2 touchdowns and ran for another as No. 2 Oceanside (6-1, 3-1) overcame a 14-0 first quarter deficit. Ramona (4-3, 1-3) recovered a fumble at the Oceanside 21 to set up its first touchdown, a 1-yard Chad Waite run. After taking possession just inside the Oceanside 10 after a bad snap on an Oceanside punt attempt, Ramona scored again on a 13-yard pass from Waite to Matt Dart. However, after the first quarter, Oceanside held Ramona to 18 yards in total offense. Fred Dunn and Lee Strain scored on passes from Garrett and Sherman Crane and Garrett ran for touchdowns as Oceanside rallied.

San Marcos 23, Escondido 8--Sophomore fullback Scott Wilson rushed 16 times for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns for visiting San Marcos (1-6, 1-3). Steve Chavez caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Clanton for San Marcos. Escondido is 0-7, 0-4.

Palomar

Orange Glen 17, Mt. Carmel 9--Ryan Strathern ran 25 yards for the go-ahead touchdown as No. 4 Orange Glen (7-0, 3-0) overcame a 9-3 deficit. Cree Morris completed 12 of 22 passes for 182 yards and 1 touchdown for Orange Glen and Jake Nyberg caught 7 passes for 145 yards and 1 touchdown. Mt. Carmel took an early lead when Mike Moffat caught a 7-yard halfback pass from John Tejcek for a touchdown.

Torrey Pines 24, Vista 0--Jon Ord completed 22 of 37 pass attempts for 317 yards and threw 2 touchdown passes at Torrey Pines. Rik Haines, the Torrey Pines coach, got his first win against his father, Vista Coach Dick Haines. Ord threw scoring passes of 2 yards to John Finley (5 catches, 85 yards) and 7 yards to Preston Bynes (6 for 116). Ord also scored on a 1-yard run and Finley added a 27-yard field goal.

City Central

Lincoln 28, Hoover 6--Vic Player got his 100th and 101st career wins Friday, one coming when a forfeit reversed an earlier loss to Point Loma and the other on the field at Hoover.

Orlanzo Edwards rushed for 123 yards on 19 carries and touchdowns were scored by Charles Brown (15-yard run), David Drake (10-yard run), Monte Smith (50-yard pass from Lonnie Fields) and Donald Anderson (1-yard run).

Said Player, whose record is 101-26-2: “I’ve been a success at what I’ve chosen to be. God gave me a chance to coach many outstanding athletes.”

Anderson, a running back/kicker/prankster, gave Player a postgame dowsing with a bucket of water.

Lincoln is 6-1, 2-0 and Hoover is 2-5, 0-2.

Christian 3, St. Augustine 0--Brett Jillson kicked a 27-yard field goal with 20 seconds to play at Balboa Stadium. Neither team threatened to score until the final quarter, when the winning points were set up when a host of Christian defenders forced a fumble on the St. Augustine 30 with about a minute to play. Christian is 2-0, 5-2. St. Augustine is 0-2, 1-6.

Crawford 35, San Diego 6--Chris Johnson threw for 3 touchdowns and ran for another and Eric Turner rushed 19 times for 122 yards and a touchdown. Johnson completed 7 of 10 passes for 88 yards.

City Eastern

Point Loma 45, Madison 0--On a day when Point Loma lost two of its earlier victories because it used an ineligible player, Ron Evans scored 3 touchdowns and Ron Lawson scored 2 to lead the Pointers to a win at Madison. Point Loma is now 2-5 overall (2-0 in league) as victories over Lincoln and Crawford have been erased. Evans scored on a 24-yard run with a recovered fumble and on runs of 43 and 48 yards.

City Western

Mira Mesa 35, Serra 28--With visiting Mira Mesa holding a 1-point lead with more than 8 minutes to play in the fourth quarter, quarterback Jimmy Murray threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to receiver Mark Ziegler. Ricky Hastey’s 2 fourth-quarter pass interceptions for Mira Mesa (1-1, 6-1) ended Serra drives. Early in the fourth quarter, Serra closed to within 29-28 on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Tom Cotner to Rod Alexander. Cotner and Alexander also combined on touchdown passes of 30 and 5 yards for Serra (0-2, 2-5). Mira Mesa trailed 22-15 at halftime, but countered with 14 points in the third quarter for a 29-22 lead. Antjuane Sims (8 carries, 67 yards) scored on runs of 7 and 37 yards, Murray completed 6 of 11 pass attempts for 172 yards and 1 touchdown and Ziegler caught 4 passes for 87 yards.

University City 19, La Jolla 17--Darnes Taylor rushed 33 times for 173 yards and 1 touchdown and Jeff Jordan returned a kickoff 91 yards for another to lead visiting University City (4-2, 2-0). La Jolla (5-2, 0-2) threatened in the fourth quarter after Craig Woodall replaced starter Fred de la Vega at quarterback and completed 9 of 13 passes for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Kearny 31, Mission Bay 8--Tom Rawlins completed 16 of 23 passes for 297 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead visiting Kearny (4-3, 2-0). Rawlins passed 46 yards to Mark Hood to give Kearny a 17-0 lead in the first quarter. Passes of 26 and 54 yards to Danny Johnson completed the scoring. Mission Bay is 3-4, 0-2.

USDHS 37, Clairemont 6--Steve Walker rushed for 2 touchdowns and Anthony Massa passed to Brian Kingston for 2 more for No. 7 USDHS (6-0, 2-0) in a game at Mesa College. Walker gained 80 yards on 10 carries and caught 3 passes for 22 yards. Massa completed 8 of 19 passes for 116 yards. Clairemont is 1-6 and 0-2.

Nonleague

Fallbrook 42, Palm Desert 7--Mak Mitchell scored on runs of 1, 1 and 4 yards, and Kelly Fieux passed twice to Robert Montoy for scores as host Fallbrook (3-4) overcame an early 7-0 deficit. Fieux’s 11-yard scoring pass to Montoy snapped a 7-7 tie in the second quarter. Fieux and Montoy hooked up on an 18-yard scoring play to make it 35-7 after three quarters.
