Toros Triumph Over Northridge in Soccer and Take Over Narrow Lead in Conference

Cal State Dominguez Hills answered the call Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over Cal State Northridge in a match that had major title ramifications in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

The teams came into the game atop the conference, separated by just one point with three games remaining. The victory moved the Toros ahead with a 5-1-1 league mark (11-4-1 overall) while Northridge returned home with a 5-2 CCAA record (11-7 overall).

Dominguez’s Willie Ayala, the league’s leading scorer, tallied the goal, his 11th of the season, off a Ric McKaig setup 31 minutes into the match.

The rest of the game was dominated by goalkeeper Chris Wilson of the Toros as the junior stopped six shots, including a penalty kick from Steve Lazarus, for his fifth shutout of the season. He got plenty of help from his defense, particularly from Martin Mira who stopped a shot from 10 yards away.

The Toro’s next match is Saturday at third-place Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
