PREP FOOTBALL : Sunset League : Smith Sparks Edison Past Marina

Junior quarterback Donnie Smith made his first start of the season a winning one in leading Edison High School to a 41-0 Sunset League victory over Marina Friday night in front of 3,500 at Orange Coast College.

Smith was filling in for Greg Angelovic, who suffered a broken thumb in Edison’s 28-21 loss last week to Fountain Valley.

Smith competed 11 of 13 passes for 160 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Gus Miranda rushed for 91 yards in 17 carries and scored 2 touchdowns.

It took Edison less than 2 minutes to score its first touchdown. The big play was a 35-yard pass from Smith to wide receiver Patrick Reilly. The Chargers’ 60-yard, 5-play drive ended with Miranda’s 2-yard run. Jon Cemok’s kick made it 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Smith scored on an 8-yard run with 40 seconds left in the first half and Cemok’s kick gave the Chargers a 14-0 halftime lead.

Edison (7-1, 2-1) scored in the third quarter on Jim Warren’s 1-yard run, Smith’s 13-yard pass to Pete Schroeder and a 4-yard run by Miranda.

The Chargers’ final touchdown came with 9:58 left in the game on a 33-yard run by tailback Shane Sherman.

Eric Crocker caught 7 passes for 54 yards for Edison.

Quarterback David Schultz was 11 of 21 for 88 yards for Marina (0-8, 0-3).
