UCSD Soccer Team Finishes Season Undefeated

The UC San Diego men’s soccer team defeated Menlo College, 3-0, Sunday, becoming the first team at the school to finish the regular season undefeated.

Thien Nguyen had a goal and an assist and Mike Lodoen and Alex Savala each added goals for host UCSD (18-0-2). It was the seventh consecutive shutout and 14th of the season.

UCSD, ranked fourth in Division III and top-ranked in the West, will likely receive a berth in the 24-team playoffs, which begin Saturday. Pairings will be announced today.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The UCSD women’s team will play the College of St. Thomas (Minn.) Saturday at St. Paul, Minn., in the first round of the Western Regional of NCAA Division III playoffs.

In the other bracket of the 4-team regional, Cortland State (N.Y.) will play St. Mary’s (Minn.). Regional finals will be played Sunday.

UCSD (17-0-1) will conclude its regular season when it plays host to Cal Poly Pomona at 2:30 today.

VOLLEYBALL

United States International University defeated Hofstra, 15-12, 15-10, 15-11, at the La Jolla Jewish Community Center.

Claudia Johnson led USIU (6-11) with 13 kills, and Cyndy Kuhter added 10 kills and 5 aces.

LUNCHEON

Former Padre announcer Dave Campbell will speak at the San Diego Press Club’s “Newsmakers” luncheon at noon Thursday at the Horton Grand Hotel.

GOLF

Golf Fest ‘88, hosted by the Bonita Men’s Golf Assn., will be Friday at the Bonita Golf Club.

The tournament, a 4-person scramble, is open to the public and benefits the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation of San Diego County.

Applications are available at the Bonita Golf Club, Rancho San Diego, Singing Hills, Chula Vista and Coronado golf courses.

The fifth annual amateur qualifying tournament for the Shearson Lehman Hutton Andy Williams Open will be Saturday, Dec. 10 at Torrey Pines South Golf Course.

Applications are available at golf courses throughout San Diego County and through the Century Club offices at gate P, San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Cost is $75 and includes a season ticket to the Andy Williams Open, Feb. 14-19. Deadline for entries is Nov. 28.
