Prep Roundup : Thompson-Urricariet Keep Tennis Title

Kelly Thompson and Stephanie Urricariet of Fountain Valley High School successfully defended their doubles championship Friday in the Sunset League girls’ tennis finals at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Thompson and Urricariet defeated Nikki Turner and Tracy Goedekke of Edison, 6-2, 6-3.

Tracy Criseol of Marina defeated Lee Hansen of Edison, 6-1, 6-1, to win the singles championship.

In the doubles semifinals, Thompson and Urricariet defeated Jenny Golfos and Laura Olesen of Edison, 6-2, 7-5. Turner and Goedekke defeated Renee Urricariet and Marrisa Mell of Fountain Valley, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6.

Golfos and Oleen then defeated Urricariet and Mell, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, in the third-place match.

In the singles semifinals, Criseol defeated Michelle Berkowitz of Fountain Valley, 6-1, 6-1, and Hansen defeated Kim Willauer of Edison, 6-1, 6-2. Berkowitz then defeated Willauer, 7-6, 6-1, in the third-place match.

In the South Coast League girls’ tennis finals:

At Heritage Park, Kristen Green of Dana Hills defeated Janet Slaynaski of Capistrano Valley, 6-0, 6-2, to win the singles championship. Michelle Foster and Page Bartlet of Capistrano Valley defeated Kelly Lynch and Heather Bolton of Dana Hills, 6-2, 6-0, to win the doubles championship.

In Sea View League boys’ cross-country finals:

Corona del Mar placed 7 runners in the top 10 in winning the meet at Irvine Park.

The Sea Kings finished with 26 points. Saddleback was second with 44 points and University third with 91 points.

The Sea Kings’ Eddie Lavalle finished first with a time of 14 minutes 27 seconds. Chris Cannon placed fourth (15:15) and was followed by Greg Shryock in sixth (15:20), Paul Scott in seventh (15:23), Steve Hochschild in eighth (15:26), Hunter Pierce in ninth (15:30) and Mike Maramoto in 10th (15:42). The top 5 finishers from each team count in the scoring.

Erin Vali of University was second with a time of 14:52 and Rob Price of Saddleback was third in 15:01.

In the Sea View League girls’ cross-country finals:

Stacy Pando placed second with a time of 18:26 to lead Newport Harbor to the team title at Irvine Park. The Sailors finished with 32 points.

University was second with 67 points and Tustin third with 68.

The Sailors placed 4 runners in the top 10. Kim Robinson was fourth (18:47), Lena Dhabour fifth (18:59) and Maggie Steinhouse was 10th (19:26).

Tanja Brix of University won the race with a time of 18:02 and Johanna Wallin of Corona del Mar was third in 18:34.

In Orange League girls’ volleyball playoffs:

Magnolia 3, Brea-Olinda 1--Jill Schneider had 25 kills to lead Magnolia to a 15-4, 7-15, 15-7, 15-8 victory. The loss eliminates Brea in the fight for the final playoff spot in the league. Western won the league title, Anaheim was second and Brea, Magnolia and Valencia tied for third. Magnolia plays Valencia for third place today at 10 at Brea-Olinda.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ volleyball:

Laguna Beach 3, Costa Mesa 0--Angie Rush had 17 assists as the host Artists swept, 15-2, 15-2, 15-3, to clinch the league title. Stacy Trager had 6 kills and Kealy Clarke 5 for Laguna Beach (14-3, 9-1)
