The tie sets up a big game for Helix when it plays Mt. Miguel Thursday. If Helix (7-1, 2-0-1) defeats Mt. Miguel, it will tie Granite Hills (7-2, 3-0-1) for the league 3-A title. Granite Hills finished its league schedule against Helix.
Taylor blocked the extra point after Granite Hills took a 6-0 lead on a 23-yard pass from Robert Howe to Jeff Waymire.
Helix tied the score when Taylor came untouched around the left side and blocked a punt.
Whitney picked the ball up at the 3 and ran in for the score.
Granite Hills took a 13-6 lead at the half as Brandt Glasener scored on a 27-yard run around the left side.
Helix tied the game after it stopped Granite Hills on a fourth and 2 at the Helix 30. The Highlanders drove the ball to the Granite Hills 22 and Tory Winrow hit Ale Campos for the touchdown from there.
Granite Hills won a tie breaker at the end of the game to decide the Grossmont League 3-A automatic qualifier to the playoffs in case the teams tie for the title.
