Steve Zungul to Get Tryout With Sockers

Steve Zungul, who has scored more goals than any other player has scored points in the history of the Major Indoor Soccer League, will begin a tryout with the Sockers Wednesday. He has a 50-50 chance of joining the team this season, Coach Ron Newman said.

Zungul, who played for the Sockers in 1984-85 and for half of the 1985-86 season, was not re-signed by the Tacoma Stars this summer. He contacted the Sockers last month about the possibility of playing in San Diego this season.

“He’ll be here for a week or so and we’ll get a chance to see how fit he is,” Newman said. “If he’s ready to play . . . he’s a masterful player.”

Zungul has scored 631 goals and 1,069 points in 9 MISL seasons. Sockers’ midfielder Branko Segota is the MISL’s all-time second-leading scorer with 592 points.

Segota won’t be scoring any more points for at least 10 days, however. He suffered a pulled hamstring in Saturday night’s 5-2 season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Lazers.

Segota, who reported to training camp only 3 days before the regular season began, was injured late in the first quarter against the Lazers.

“He didn’t come back to us early enough,” Newman said. “We were hoping to make it through that first game with him, but we didn’t. Now, we have to make sure we don’t rush him back again.”

San Diego State will play at UCLA at 1 p.m. Sunday in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division I soccer playoffs.

SDSU (15-2-4) played UCLA (12-4-4) to a 1-1 tie Sunday in Los Angeles to end the regular season. The teams also met in the quarterfinals last year with the Aztecs winning, 2-1. They eventually lost in the championship game to Clemson, 2-1.

The winner will play at Portland in the second round the following weekend. Portland was one of 8 seeded teams in the 24-team tournament to receive a bye in the first round.

UC San Diego will host Emory (Ga.) College in an NCAA Division III quarterfinal Sunday at 1 p.m. at Warren Field. The Tritons (20-0-2) are ranked fourth in the country. UCSD hasn’t advanced past the quarterfinals since 1986, when it lost to North Carolina-Greensboro in the Division III championship game.

BASKETBALL

Western Athletic Conference coaches picked Colorado State to win the 1988-89 basketball championship and San Diego State to finish fifth, it was announced Monday.

Colorado State received 4 first-place votes for 50 points. Utah was second with 47 points, followed by UTEP with 45, New Mexico (42), BYU (28), San Diego State (26), Wyoming (20), Hawaii (16) and Air Force (8).

Utah received 2 first-place votes and UTEP and New Mexico one each. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

FOOTBALL

Nose guard Brad Burton will miss the remainder of the San Diego State football season because of an infected right ankle, it was announced Monday. Burton has been hospitalized since Oct. 30. Tight end Ray Rowe (shoulder) and wide receiver Patrick Rowe (groin) have been listed as questionable for SDSU’s game at Texas-El Paso Saturday.
