Occidental May Settle for Share of Title Despite 2 Wins Over SCIAC Foe Redlands

Share

Occidental clinched a share of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football championship by defeating Redlands, 23-13, last Saturday.

It was Occidental’s second conference victory this season over Redlands, but the teams could still wind up as SCIAC co-champions.

Because of the small number of Division III teams in Southern California, SCIAC schools play one conference team twice in a season. The games count as a half-game in the standings. If the teams split, they are each given a tie.

Thus, Occidental and Redlands have identical conference records of 4-1. If Occidental loses to Whittier on Saturday and Redlands defeats La Verne, the teams would share the SCIAC title.

If that comes to pass, Redlands Coach Mike Maynard will offer no apologies.

Said Maynard: “I wouldn’t have any bitterness and I don’t think that’s how they’re looking at it.”

Wrong.

“Personally, I think it would be ridiculous if that happened,” Widolff said. “Hopefully, we won’t have to face it.”
