Community College Roundup : Saddleback Falls Back, Rallies at the Line to Beat Compton

Saddleback College defeated Compton, 80-65, Wednesday in a nonconference men’s basketball game at Saddleback. Tyrone Meixsell made a 3-pointer with 4:17 left in the first half to put Saddleback ahead, 28-26, and the Gauchos were never again behind.

Saddleback made 23 of 28 free throws (19 of 23 in the second half) to prevent a Compton (5-2) rally.

Sean Keyes led Saddleback (3-3) with 20 points, Vincent Mason scored 16 and Wun Versher 13. Meixsell finished with 8 points.

In another nonconference game:

Cypress 86, Claremont JV 67--Jay Barrington scored 17 points to lead Cypress at Cypress.

Cypress led, 38-34, at the half but went on an 11-0 run in the first 3 minutes 15 seconds of the second half to take control.

Barrington, a freshman guard, scored 6 points during the 11-0 run. He was 8 of 11 from the field and made his only 3-point attempt.

Wendell Lauderdale scored 14 points and had 5 rebounds and was 7 of 9 from the field for Cypress, which shot 59% (33 of 56).

Andre Lamoureux and Ian Donnelly had 11 each and Jeff Given 10 for Cypress (2-3).

Donnally, a freshman forward from Katella High School, was 5 of 5 from the free throw line and has made 15 consecutive to open the season.

The Cypress record for consecutive free throws is 19 held by Jim Sammon (1988) and Gerry Sypkens (1981).

Claremont is 2-2.

In the Antelope Valley tournament:

Golden West 114, Bakersfield 69--The Rustlers shot 65% (51 of 78) from the field and were 8 of 10 on 3-point shots in the first-round victory.

Markus Muller-Stach, a sophomore forward, scored 29 points on 9-of-14 shooting. He has scored 20 or more points in all 7 Golden West games this season.

Dave Yamate, a freshman guard from Marina High School, added 22 for Golden West (6-1), which led, 61-23, at the half. Elbert Davis and Doug Rice scored 12 each, and Alexis Kreps 10 for Golden West.

Golden West plays Palomar today at 3:45 in the second round.
