THE PREPS : Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Trabuco Hills Rallies, Then Holds Off Newport Harbor

Rick Swanwick made a 5-foot shot with 12 seconds left and Trabuco Hills High School rallied in the fourth quarter for a 48-44 victory over Newport Harbor Thursday night in the first round of the Newport-Mesa tournament at Newport Harbor High School.

Newport Harbor (0-1) led by 3 points with 2 minutes 20 seconds remaining, but Trabuco Hills rallied to take a 46-42 lead with less than a minute left. Scott Gray, who had 19 points and 7 rebounds for Newport Harbor, hit a 15-foot jump shot with 32 seconds left to cut the score to 46-44.

The Mustangs (1-0) worked 20 seconds off the clock before geting the ball in low to Swanwick, who had 12 points.

Randy Kriech led Trabuco Hills with 15 points, all on 3-pointers.

The Mustangs made 10 3-pointers, 5 in the second quarter when they built a 30-21 halftime lead. Kriech made 3 3-pointers during the quarter.

Chad Poulous scored 12 points for Trabuco Hills. Chris Lee scored 10 for Newport Harbor.

In other Newport-Mesa tournament games:

Mater Dei 81, Glenn 26--The Monarchs scored the first 27 points of the game before Glenn scored early in the second quarter in a first-round game at Newport Harbor. Dylan Rigdon scored 18 points to lead Mater Dei (1-0), which led, 23-0, at the end of the first quarter. David Boyle scored 13 points and Andy Karich 11 for the Monarchs, who led, 41-8, at halftime.

El Toro 84, Mayfair 49--The Chargers jumped to an 18-4 first-quarter lead in a first-round game at Costa Mesa High School. Rob Johnson scored 16 points for El Toro. Greg Reynolds and Matt Thompson each scored 15 for the Chargers, who led, 41-14, at halftime. Russ May scored 23 points for Mayfair.

Saddleback 64, Costa Mesa 49--Malru Dottin and Craig Marshall each scored 14 points to lead the Roadrunners (1-0) in a first-round game at Costa Mesa. Tim Nguyen scored 29 points for Costa Mesa (0-1).

In the Orange Lutheran tournament:

Southern California Christian 98, Cal Lutheran 44--Kenny Cross scored 43 points to lead the Flames in a first-round game at Orange Lutheran High School. Southern California led, 28-2, after the first quarter. Shawn Wilshite scored 26 points for the Flames.

Orange Lutheran 81, San Diego Lutheran 36--The host Lancers led, 27-6, at the end of the first quarter and, 48-17, at halftime. Daryl Cole scored 18 points and Pat Bagatourian 16 for Orange Lutheran (1-0).

In nonleague games:

Lakewood 80, Servite 67--Brian Camper scored 26 points and Victor Camper 18 for Lakewood (1-0) at Servite. Lakewood led, 20-11, after a quarter and, 42-22, at halftime. Andy Kennedy scored 20 points and Steve Murisch 16 for Servite (0-1).

Santa Ana 79, Buena Park 39--Mike Zamora score 24 points, all on 3-point field goals, to lead the host Saints. Zamora was 8 of 9 on 3-point attempts and made 3 in the first quarter. Santa Ana (1-0) led, 22-3, after a quarter. Sophomore Ramon Yerena had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Saints, who led, 41-17, at halftime.
