Santa Clara 76, Alemany 41--The Saints scored 16 of the first 18 points and were never in danger in the first-round game. Shon Tarver, a transfer from Rim of the World, scored a game-high 16 points for Santa Clara, the top-ranked Division 2-A team.

Royal 56, Muir 48--J.P. Ouellette and Greg Laranjo finished strongly down the stretch as the Highlanders upset Muir, the third-ranked team in the 4-A Division.

Ouellette had 15 points and Laranjo, a 5-7 point guard, added 10.

In other games:

Oakwood 46, L.A. Baptist 43--Mitchell Butler scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Gorillas in a nonleague opener at L. A. Baptist.

Butler scored 13 points in the second half to help Oakwood overcome a 27-21 halftime deficit. Brett Craig, who led the Knights with 16 points, sat out most of the second half because of foul trouble. Knight guard David Garcia took up the slack by scoring 10 of his 15 points in the second half.
