Prep Soccer Roundup : Laguna Hills Faster to Draw in Shootout

Jeff Calvert made two diving saves during the shootout as Laguna Hills High School scored a 3-0 victory on penalty kicks over Dana Hills in the first round of the Irvine soccer tournament Saturday at Heritage Park.

With the score tied, 5-5, at the end of regulation, Laguna Hills (2-0-1) took a 1-0 shootout lead on a penalty kick goal by Derrick Webster. After Mike Stevens’ shot for Dana Hills (0-2) hit the crossbar and bounced in front of the goal, Scott Clark extended the Hawks’ lead to 2-0 by grounding the ball past Dolphin goalie John Hodge.

In between Calvert’s saves on shots by Mike Whipple and Andres Guarez, Laguna Hills got its third shootout goal from Chad Muhr.

Dana Hills led at halftime, 4-2, but Laguna Hills cut the lead to 4-3 with 7 minutes gone in the second half on a header by Brian Slayback. After Gabriel Smith scored his fourth goal of the game for the Dolphins a penalty kick at the 14-minute mark, Laguna Hills came back to make the score 5-4 on sophomore Juan Strutton’s goal.

The Hawks, who entered the game ranked fourth among Southern Section 2-A schools, tied the score with 10 minutes left in regulation on Webster’s penalty kick.

Laguna Hills will play Corona del Mar in a second-round game Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Sea Kings earned their berth by defeating Laguna Beach, 3-1.

In other first-round boys’ matches:

Foothill 2, Trabuco Hills 0--Erick Fukuda and Michael Pashley scored goals for the Knights, who will play San Clemente in the second round Monday at Heritage Park.

San Clemente 3, University 2--Stewart Bradshaw scored all the Tritons’ goals. Paul Simon and David Jacobson scored for the Trojans.

Sunny Hills 4, Woodbridge 1--Nick Rose had 2 goals and an assist and Cameron Hill and Matt Marino had goals for Sunny Hills. The Lancers will play Tustin in a second-round game Tuesday.

Tustin 1, El Toro 0--Andy Fisher scored midway through the second half. Tustin goalie Mike Snaadt made 15 saves.

In the Orange tournament:

Mission Viejo 2, Canyon 1--Marcus Mitchell scored late in the second half and goalkeeper Chris Snitko had 10 saves for Canyon (1-1).

Canyon 2, Leuzinger 1--Andy Birozi and Richard Bein scored for Canyon and Snitko had 5 saves.

In the Santa Ana Elks tournament:

Fountain Valley 1, Santa Ana Valley 0--Kyle James scored 15 minutes into the game to lead the Barons at Santa Ana Valley.

Fountain Valley 3, Cypress 2--Tony Meza scored twice and Shawn Stefan once to lead the Barons (2-0).

In girls’ Irvine tournament games:

Tustin 8, Laguna Beach 0--Melanie Cary scored 3 goals for the Tillers.

Troy 3, San Clemente 1--Jenny Scanlon scored twice and assisted on another for Troy.

Woodbridge 2, University 1--Tonya Dzurilla and Lisa Olsson each had goals for Woodbridge.

Los Alamitos 5, Laguna Hills 1--Leanna Jay had a goal and 4 assists for the Griffins. Jenny Reyes, Dana Mariotti, Laura Bun and Julie Kanasi also scored for Los Alamitos.

Foothill 3, Sunny Hills 0--Amanda Naylor scored 2 goals and Keri Maeda scored 1.

Corona del Mar 3, El Toro 2--Julie Smith scored 2 goals and Kristen Borland 1 to lead the Sea Kings at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Westminster 2, Irvine 1--Julie Johnston scored and Irvine had an own goal, and goalkeeper Julie Jones had 20 saves to lead Westminster. Heather Connolly scored for Irvine.

In nonleague boys’ games:

Brea-Olinda 2, Bell Gardens 0--J.R. Ochs scored on a penalty kick in the first half and Jason Ochs scored off a free kick in the second as Brea, ranked sixth in Southern Section 2-A, defeated the third-ranked team in the division at Brea Junior High. Brea is 2-0; Bell Gardens 1-1.
