Valley High School Boys’ Soccer : Monroe Tops Kennedy to Remain Undefeated

Monroe High scored 2 goals early in the second half to break a 2-2 tie and went on to post a 5-3 victory over Kennedy in a nonleague boys’ soccer match Monday at Monroe.

Jaime Leal scored an unassisted goal to give Monroe a 3-2 lead and Ulysses Mendoza followed with a goal off a rebound in the second half as Monroe, a semifinalist in the City Section playoffs last season, improved its record to 3-0.

Trailing, 2-1, late in the first half, Monroe tied the score when Sergio Vargas recorded his sixth goal of the season.

Reseda 2, El Camino Real 2--Mario Cristales scored on a direct penalty kick with 3 minutes left as Reseda avoided an upset in the nonleague contest at El Camino Real.

Guillermo Castro gave Reseda (2-0-1), the defending City champion, a 1-0 lead when he scored on an assist from Teddy Davila 15 minutes into the first half. El Camino Real is 0-2-1.

Poly 1, Canoga Park 0--Edgar Rivera scored the only goal on an assist from Jose Jacobo 5 minutes into the second half as Poly (2-0) remained undefeated in a nonleague match at home.

Harvard 2, Flintridge Prep 0--Marty Holly and Aaron Friedland scored goals for Harvard (1-3) in a nonleague match at Harvard.

San Fernando 3, Lincoln 1--Andrew Munoz, Sergio Bizano and Rogelio Muro each scored for San Fernando (2-1) in the nonleague match at Lincoln.

Granada Hills 2, Roosevelt 0--David Salita and Paul Reineke scored for the Highlanders (2-0-1) in the nonleague match at Roosevelt.

Royal 4, Moorpark 1--Ian Whitaker scored 2 goals and teammates Matt Brinkman and Oscar Vela added 1 each for Royal (2-1) in the nonleague match at Moorpark.

Birmingham 3, Verdugo Hills 2--Scott Brown scored twice--including the game-winner with 2 minutes remaining--for the Braves (3-0) in a nonleague match at Birmingham.

St. Francis 2, Notre Dame 0--J. P. Roberge and David Beall scored for St. Francis (5-1) in the nonleague match at St. Francis. Notre Dame is 4-2.

Alemany 2, Paraclete 1--Joe Favre and Kevin Allen scored first-half goals for the Indians (4-1) in the nonleague match.
