USD’s Day All-Academic in Football

Bryan Day of the University of San Diego has been named to the GTE Academic All-America college division football first team for the second year in a row.

Day, a senior strong safety from Las Vegas, has an overall grade point average of 3.78 in business economics. He led the Toreros in tackles (88) for the second consecutive year and had 2 1/2 sacks, forced 2 fumbles, recovered 4 fumbles, had 2 interceptions and deflected 8 passes.

USD’s John Gomez was named to the second team. Gomez, a senior defensive back from El Cajon High, has a 3.60 GPA in business administration and had 34 tackles, a sack and 8 quarterback hurries.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Earnest Riggins will be looking for his 100th career victory as San Diego State’s coach tonight when SDSU plays host to the University of the Pacific in its Big West Conference opener.

Riggins’ record with the Aztecs is 99-58.

The Aztecs have been idle since Dec. 6, when they defeated USD, 82-47, at home. They are off to their best start (6-0) since beginning the season 8-0 in 1984-85. SDSU is led by senior center Chana Perry. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. in Peterson Gym.

SOCCER

Four San Diego college athletes were selected to the 1988 All-America men’s and women’s soccer teams, selected by a vote of coaches.

Junior Marcelo Balboa of San Diego State was one of three backs voted to the first team in men’s Division I. Senior Thein Van Nguyen of UC San Diego was one of eight forwards selected to the Division III third team.

Freshman forward Katy Dulac of UCSD was a Division III first-team selection, and senior back Susan Kramer, also of UCSD, made the second team.
