Prep Basketball : Roundup : Mater Dei Comes Back to Edge Fresno Edison

Mater Dei High School, trailing by five points to start the fourth quarter, needed two free throws by Dylan Rigdon with less than a minute to play to beat Fresno Edison, 64-63, in a championship semifinal of the Tournament of Champions Thursday at Ocean View.

Mater Dei advances to play the winner of tonight’s Ocean View-Capistrano Valley semifinal for the tournament championship Saturday.

Rigdon, who finished with 21 points, was fouled while shooting with about 20 seconds to play. He made both free throws to give Mater Dei the victory.

David Boyle led the Monarchs with 22 points, and Derek Stone added 12 points and 9 rebounds. Rigdon also contributed 12 rebounds.

Deshawn Johnson led Fresno Edison with 21 points.

In the Arroyo Grande tournament:

Fountain Valley 67, San Luis Obispo 54--Mike Merli scored 23 points, Tom Weaver had 17 and Derrick Corcoran added 11 to lead Fountain Valley (6-0) to a first-round victory. The Barons led at the half, 38-23.

Righetti 64, Anaheim 61--Tony Raffetto scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half to lead Righetti in first-round action. The taller Righetti team shot 26 free throws in the game compared with 7 for Anaheim. Trailing 62-58, Anaheim’s Danny Castro (17 points) hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 1. Anaheim (1-3) then fouled Righetti’s Mark Hickey who hit both shots of a one-and-one to give Righetti the 3-point lead. Victor Zambrano’s 3-point shot at the buzzer to try to send the game to overtime failed.

In the El Dorado tournament:

El Dorado 80, Canyon 62--Mike Renaud scored 23 points, Mike Bradach 17, and Tim Murray 10 to pace El Dorado (6-1) in a semifinal. El Dorado led from the start and ended the half leading, 46-28. The Golden Hawks maintained close to a 20-point lead throughout the second half. El Dorado plays the winner of today’s Long Beach Jordan-Sunny Hills game for the championship Saturday at 8 p.m.

Whittier Christian 50, Santa Clarita Canyon 48--Matt Riehm scored 15 points and Steve Matthies 12 as Whittier Christian won in a consolation semifinal. Downey plays Edison at 5 p.m. today in the other consolation semifinal. The consolation championship is Saturday at 2 p.m.
