High School Basketball Roundup : Torrey Pines’ Pressure Rattles Orange Glen

The Torrey Pines High School boys’ basketball team used a suffocating press to create 26 turnovers and defeat Orange Glen, 70-29, in the semifinals of the Lt. Mitchell tournament Monday at San Dieguito.

Torrey Pines, the defending tournament champion, will play Las Vegas High--a 78-70 winner over El Camino--in tonight’s 8:15 championship game at San Dieguito High.

Torrey Pines (9-0) scored the game’s first 15 points to take a 27-4 first-quarter lead. Darren Cox scored 11 of his 16 points in the first quarter for Torrey Pines. Center Kevin Flanagan led Torrey Pines with 22 points, Courtie Miller had 12 points and 14 rebounds and Kyle Armstrong had 12 points and 13 assists.

Shawn Macklin scored 14 points for Orange Glen (4-7). Orange Glen will play El Camino in the third-place game at 6:30 p.m.

Las Vegas 78, El Camino 70--Marlon Brandon scored a game-high 28 points to lead Las Vegas, which led by 2 at halftime. Las Vegas (7-1) wore El Camino (4-2) down with its full-court press in the second half and opened up a 12-point lead by the end of the third quarter. Travis Gilley led El Camino with 16 points and 6-foot 7-inch junior center Dee Boyer added 15. Las Vegas was undefeated on the court at the Lt. Mitchell tournament last year but was put in the consolation round after showing up late for its first game.

Consolation Semifinals

San Dieguito 41, Newport Harbor 37--Matt de La Pena scored 14 points to lead host San Dieguito (4-4). Brian Malewicz added 9 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs, who led, 21-12, at halftime after holding Newport Harbor to just 3 points in the second quarter. San Dieguito will meet Carlsbad in the consolation final today at 4:45 at San Dieguito.

Carlsbad 52, San Marcos 47--Calvin Coleman scored 14 points and Carlsbad (5-3) broke open a slowdown game with a 22-point fourth quarter to move into the consolation final. Jeff Jarand added 10 points for Carlsbad. Matt Barrick led San Marocs (3-5) with 16 points.

Vista 56, Escondido 52--Herbie Weston scored 24 points to lead Vista (4-6). John Hauser added 13 points for the Panthers, who led, 31-26, at halftime. Vista will play in the fifth-place game today at 2:45 against Alaska Anchorage, a 66-49 winner over San Clemente.

Mira Mesa 63, Mt. Miguel 45--Marc Ziegler scored 23 points and J.J. Rollett added 15 as Mira Mesa (3-4) pulled away at Serra High. Mira Mesa led, 29-24, at halftime but outscored Mt. Miguel, 18-9, in the third quarter.

Monte Vista 46, Fallbrook 43--Jeff Polinsky scored 17 points and Bren Jacobsen added 13 points and 9 rebounds for Monte Vista at Patrick Henry High. Travis Teagle led Fallbrook (3-5) with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Monte Vista (5-1) made 18 of 38 shots; Fallbrook made 19 of 58. Monte Vista will play at Patrick Henry--a 72-58 winner over Rancho Buena Vista--at 6:30 in tonight’s second round.

San Diego 75, Los Alamitos 67--Clark James scored 22 points and Milton Miller added 19 to lead San Diego (5-1) at Patrick Henry High. San Diego led, 53-39, after three quarters but Dan Stockwell pulled Los Alamitos closer by hitting four 3-point shots in the fourth quarter. Robert Conlisk led Los Alamitos with 21 points and Stockwell finished with 13.

Serra 66, Southwest 56--Serra outscored Southwest, 20-12, in the fourth quarter at Serra High. Desi Dixon scored 24 points for Serra (5-3) and Jermaine Jordan added 13. Southwest’s Adalberto Silva scored 22. Serra will play host to Mt. Carmel at 8:15 in tonight’s second round.

Mt. Carmel 63, Helix 37--Jeff Hensley scored 16 and Shane Knight had 13 to lead Mt. Carmel (5-1) at Helix.

Limited Division

Madison 66, Clairemont 65--Robby Robinson scored a layup with 20 seconds left in the game and Madison held on to win at La Jolla High. Madison (4-4) outscored Clairemont, 19-12, in the fourth quarter. Clairemont missed 3 free throws in the final 30 seconds and John Matthews’ 19-footer with 2 seconds to play bounced off the rim. Robinson scored 37 points for Madison. Ray McDavid had 30 points and 13 rebounds for Clairemont (4-4). Madison will play Kearny at 6:30 at La Jolla High in the second round.

Kearny 63, St. Augustine 57--Tom Rawlins scored 18 and Andre White and Danny Johnson had 15 apiece to lead host Kearny. St. Augustine led, 27-20, at halftime, but Kearny rallied in the third quarter, outscoring St. Augustine 16-11. Kearny (6-3) dominated overtime.

Hoover 68, Mission Bay 63--John Akridge scored 19 and Roger Blake had 16 to help Hoover (1-7) to its first victory. Mission Bay (4-3) committed 24 turnovers, many of which were forced by Hoover’s full-court press. Mission Bay led early in the fourth quarter but Hoover regained the lead with 3 minutes remaining, forcing Mission Bay to foul. Hoover capitalized at the free-throw line, Bracy Simmons converting 5 of 5 and Akridge 9 of 10. Hoover made just 3 field goals in the fourth quarter. Keith Berkeley led Mission Bay with 13 points.

La Jolla 93, Vancouver 66--Adam Kleid scored 34 with four 3-pointers to lead host La Jolla (7-2). David Berteaux had 11 assists and Kyle Kupiec had 21 rebounds for La Jolla, which outscored Vancouver, 22-9, in the second quarter.

University City 60, Hilltop 59--University City escaped to advance to play Lincoln at Hoover in tonight’s 8:15 second round.

Sweetwater tournament

Maple Ridge (Canada) 59, Mar Vista 34--Mar Vista trailed, 31-22, at halftime but things got worse in the third quarter when Maple Ridge held the Mariners without a point at Sweetwater High. “We missed three layups right off the bat, and we got absolutely no offense going after that,” Mar Vista Coach George Anderson said. “It was unbelievable.” Maple Ridge scored 12 points in the third quarter to take a 43-22 lead. Cruz Soltero led Mar Vista with 12 points.

Sweetwater 68, Burnaby Central (Canada) 43--Joe McDowell scored 15 points to lead host Sweetwater. The Red Devils (8-0) led, 38-29, at halftime. Burnaby Central is 7-4.

Granite Hills 89, Coronado 51--Mark Phillips scored 20 points and Heath Beason added 18 to lead Granite Hills. The Eagles, who led, 44-17, at halftime, also got 14 points from John Russell.

Kiwanis Tournament

Unlimited Division

Patrick Henry 70, San Dieguito 30--Sorii Epps scored 37 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and Rochelle Johnson had 20 rebounds and scored 16 for Patrick Henry at Santana. Patrick Henry will meet Poway at Santana High at 3 p.m. in today’s second round.

Poway 56, Monte Vista 40--Laura Nugent led Poway with 20 points and 10 rebounds at Santana High. Dawn Gigstad scored 9 points for Poway (4-2). Diana Clough paced Monte Vista with 9 points. Poway 34-18 at halftime.

Fallbrook 43, Mira Mesa 37--Carol Reed and Terri Pearson had 11 points each for Fallbrook (7-1) at Point Loma. Reed grabbed 8 rebounds and Julie Furleigh added 7. Fallbrook will play Mission Bay at 8:15 in tonight’s second round at Point Loma High.

Mission Bay 53, Granite Hills 36--Cristina Willis led Mission Bay with 23 points and teammate Bonnie Martin added 22 for Mission Bay (7-5) at Point Loma High.

Kiwanis Tournament

Limited Division El Capitan 56, Clairemont 10--Melissa Hadfield had game highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead El Capitan (8-0) at Madison. Andrea Bravo had 11 points, 9 steals and 5 assists and Lisa Blochberger pulled down 10 rebounds for the Vaqueros. Clairemont is 1-8.

Rancho Buena Vista 52, Kearny 28--Shawna Edge scored 14 points and Stephanie Howells added 9 points and 9 assists for Rancho Buena Vista at Kearny.
