It was a quick, flick of a kick that gave the Mission Viejo High School girls’ soccer team its only goal Thursday in the final of the Ocean View tournament at Ocean View High School.

But the kick, a left-footed shot by--who else?--Diablo star Julie Foudy, was just enough to give Mission Viejo a 1-0 victory over Mater Dei.

The victory boosts Mission Viejo’s national-record streak to 79 consecutive games without a loss. Some still expect that streak to end this season, reasoning that the Diablos (10-0) are too young and inexperienced to ward off the inevitable.

But Thursday, thanks to Foudy’s goal and some tenacious defense, Mission Viejo’s winning routine continued without a glitch.

Foudy scored just minutes into the game. Kristen Walkins dribbled down the sideline from 30 yards out and passed across to the center. Foudy spun to her left and shot. The ball ricocheted off the post, out of range of Mater Dei goalkeeper Michelle Lodyga, and into the goal.

“It was a good shot, (though) Julie might call it lucky,” said Lodyga, who played a tremendous game that included 17 saves, many on sprawling dives.

Said Foudy: “Anything with my left foot is luck. . . . All my goals are lucky.”

The Diablos continued to attack after scoring, outshooting Mater Dei, 12-2, in the first half. But Mater Dei’s defense held strong.

“We had some great shots,” Mission Viejo Coach Jim Dutton said. “But Lodyga made some great saves. She’s a quality goalie.”

Said Lodyga, who lives in Mission Viejo and plays club soccer with several of the Mission Viejo players: “I really wanted us to break their streak today. But it’s tough playing them, they’re always so psyched.”
