The Ocean View High School girls’ basketball team earned an important, 47-46, victory over Fountain Valley Friday night in the Edison-Marina tournament.

It was important for two reasons.

The victory gave the Seahawks (13-2) the tournament championship and showed that they will be a threat to win the Sunset League championship.

Fountain Valley (8-6) had been the favorite to win both the tournament and the league titles. The Barons--defending league champions--were the tournament’s top-seeded team.

But that was before Friday night’s upset by the Seahawks.

The victory was a big step for Ocean View, which finished last season 8-16 overall and 2-8 in league play.

Ocean View’s Heidi Hasemann, a senior forward, made the front end of a 1-and-1 situation with 44 seconds left, breaking a 46-46 tie.

Stacey Hisaka, Fountain Valley point guard, made a 3-point basket with 1:02 left that had tied the score.

“We’ve been in a lot of tight spots this season and that helped us,” said Ollie Martin, Ocean View coach.

Fountain Valley had three chances to take the lead after Hesemann’s free throw, but Ocean View survived to win.

Yvette Ybarra, who led Fountain Valley with 15 points, missed a short jumper. Danielle Barlow rebounded but had her shot blocked by the Seahawks’ Jenny Sullivan.

Cossette Smith of Ocean View was fouled a moment later, but missed the front end of the 1-and-1.

Fountain Valley rebounded and worked the ball to Ybarra for a 12-foot jumper with 4 seconds left. Her shot rimmed in and out, however.

Sullivan, a 6-foot 2-inch junior center, had 9 points for Ocean View and was named the tournament most valuable player.

“She came through with a lot of big plays for us,” Martin said.

Her block on Barlow was the most important, though.

Hasemann had 11 points to lead Ocean View. Smith added 10 and Fabiola Nunez 9.

Julie Workman, a junior guard, had 10 points and Hisaka added 9 for Fountain Valley.

In the third-place game:

Mater Dei 58, Katella 51--Kelly O’Brien had 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead Mater Dei (9-4). O’Brien had 14 in the fourth quarter. Katella went scoreless in the last 3:07 after Joni Easterly, who had a team-high 23 points, fouled out. Katella led, 51-50, when Easterly left. Margaret Harker added 16 points for Katella (11-3).

In the fifth-place game:

Foothill 48, Long Beach Wilson 46--Foothill’s Tanya Foxe scored 27 points. The Knights overcame a 22-point game by Wilson’s Rosie Luevanos. Vivian Johnson added 17 points for Wilson (5-9). Foothill is 6-6.

In the seventh-place game:

El Toro 54, Mission Viejo 49--Karie Yoshioka’s 15 points led El Toro. Michelle Mauney added 14 points for El Toro (9-4). Derrie Nauta led Mission Viejo (11-3) with 11 points.
