Local News in Brief : Furnace Fire Spreads, Kills Northridge Man
A 58-year-old man died in his Northridge home Monday when a fire spread from a floor furnace to nearby combustible materials, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.
The victim, John Dennis Farrant, was found on the floor of the home in the 8900 block of Yolanda Avenue after firefighters arrived about 7 a.m., department spokesman Jim Williamson said.
The fire was quickly extinguished, Williamson said. The body of the victim, who had apparently been overcome by smoke inhalation, was found in the living room near the floor furnace, he said. Damage was estimated at $5,500.
