Julie Foudy scored her 14th goal of the season late in the first half Tuesday as Mission Viejo High School extended its undefeated streak to 82 games with a 1-0 South Coast League victory over Capistrano Valley at Mission Viejo.

Mission Viejo (12-0-1, 1-0-1), which held Capistrano Valley (10-4-1, 1-1) to only 5 shots, scored with 10 minutes left in the first half when Foudy dribbled the ball along the back of the penalty area and lined a rising shot past goalie Susan Bone.

Capistrano Valley got its best chance to tie the score midway through the second half when Gretchen Fleiscali took a pass from Ginger Frank in the Mission Viejo penalty area. But Fleiscali’s line-drive kick was stopped by goalie Tamar DeFries.

“We ran all day long, but we weren’t attacking the ball,” said Steve Bignel, Capistrano Valley coach, whose team was ranked sixth in Southern Section 4-A. “We spent most of our time chasing the other team instead of attacking the ball, and you don’t win games doing that. The Foudy goal was a classic case of this. We gave her too much space, and we just stood there and let her dribble the ball through for the score.”

Mission Viejo Coach Jim Dutton gave credit to his defense.

“There were one or two times when we had little screwups, but the kids did a very good job in backing each other up defensively,” he said. “And we got a lot of very good midfield defense as well.”

Bone, who made 3 first-half saves before being replaced by Kathy Szafranski at the start of the second half, denied Mission Viejo a second score 2 minutes after Foudy’s goal with a lunging save of Jennifer Ward’s free kick from just outside the penalty area.

“We let them take the ball to us,” Bignel said. “We were just watching the ball bounce around, and they were going out and getting it. We were really flat out there.”
