PREP BASKETBALL : Boys’ Roundup : Garden Grove Rallies in Fourth Quarter, Beats Kennedy in Overtime

Trailing by 11 points early in the fourth quarter, Garden Grove High School came back to send the game into overtime and upset Kennedy, 37-35, Friday in a Garden Grove League boys’ basketball game at Garden Grove.

Junior forward Chuck York, Garden Grove’s first substitution of the game, went in with 6 minutes remaining and hit 2 3-point shots, the second one to tie the score, 35-35, with 19 seconds remaining. Kennedy’s Mike Pettengill missed a shot at the buzzer.

Senior guard Brian Tran hit a driving jump shot with 4 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Argonauts (3-11 overall, 2-3 in league play) the victory in front of about 500. Kennedy is 10-7, 3-2.

In overtime, Kennedy won the tip and Tom Deep went to the line for a 1-and-1 with 2:48 remaining. He missed the first shot and Garden Grove, which played a delay game throughout, worked the ball to set up Tran’s shot.

Garden Grove’s Joe Squyres, a junior, led all scorers with 15 points and hit 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Jim Barker, who led Kennedy with 10 points, got off a 26-foot shot at the end of overtime but missed.

In other Garden Grove League games:

Pacifica 64, Rancho Alamitos 50--Bill Maurer scored 14 points and had 12 assists to lead Pacifica (10-3, 5-0) at home. Mike Maher had 18 points and 13 rebounds for Pacifica.

La Quinta 72, Los Amigos 54--Scott Campbell scored 27 points to lead visiting La Quinta.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 71, La Habra 68--Lee Green made a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left to complete a comeback for Fullerton, which trailed by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter at La Habra. Guard Rene Arias helped the Fullerton comeback with 32 points. He had 8 3-pointers, including 4 in the fourth quarter. Fullerton is 10-5, 3-0.

Sunny Hills 65, Buena Park 28--The Lancers won their third consecutive game, led by guard Jeff White (17 points) and forward Marcus Hopkins (15). Buena Park is 0-12, 0-3.

Sonora 45, Troy 42--Sonora gained a 18-7 first-quarter lead, then paced by Tim Savage (11 points) and some exceptional team defense, the Raiders (6-9, 1-2) held on.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 68, Woodbridge 62--Chris Sheff scored 23 points and Pat Nelson added 18 to lead visiting Laguna Hills (11-7, 2-0). It was the first Pacific Coast League loss for Woodbridge, which was 22-0 in 3 seasons.

Jason Thompson scored 6 of his 8 points in the fourth quarter, including 2 free throws with about 40 seconds left to clinch the victory.

Laguna Beach 67, Orange 54--Dain Blanton scored 23 points and had 9 rebounds and John McKeown had 9 rebounds, 8 points and 7 assists to lead Laguna Beach (7-8, 1-1) at home.

Trabuco Hills 93, Costa Mesa 70--Rick Swanwick scored 23 points and Randy Kreich added 18 to lead Trabuco Hills at home. Costa Mesa’s Tran Nguyen led all scorers with 29 points.

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 60, Tustin 59--Mike Curtis scored on a layup with 5 seconds remaining for Estancia at Tustin.

Tustin had 19 turnovers in the game, including 3 costly turnovers in the final 2 minutes. Curtis led Estancia (14-2, 1-1) with 20 points, Augustin Heredia had 17 and Tim Kjar 12. Cheavly Ly had 20 points and Dylon Steiler 17 for Tustin (11-6, 1-1).

Corona del Mar 57, Newport Harbor 52--Brian Spratt had 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead Corona del Mar (12-4, 2-0) at home. Matt Herrington added 14, and Warren Johnson 13 for Corona del Mar. Billy Nguyen scored 13 points, Chris Lee 12 and Scott Gray 10 for Newport Harbor (11-6, 2-0).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 74, Ocean View 65--Huntington Beach made 20 of 24 free throws and outrebounded Ocean View, 38-25, to beat the Seahawks for the first time in 7 years. Scott Drake and Steve Lucas each scored 18 points for the Oilers (7-9, 2-1).

Center Todd Norman, averaging 21 points per game, was limited 9 points for Ocean View (11-6, 1-2).

Fountain Valley 78, Westminster 50--Mike Cook scored 18 points to lead visiting Fountain Valley (15-2, 3-0).

Edison 39, Marina 37--Center Bill Martineau scored 12 points and had 9 rebounds and Edison (9-10, 2-1) used a sagging man-to-man defense that contained Marina center Cherokee Parks. Marina (8-10, 1-2) fell behind, 13-2, in the first quarter and never recovered.

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 58, Heritage 51--Dan Campaign scored 18 points and Rusty Carroll and Jim Gillfillan each scored 15 to lead St. Margaret’s at home.
