CSUN Upsets No. 2 Hawaii in Volleyball

Cal State Northridge finished eighth after 2 days of pool play in the 20-team UC Santa Barbara Invitational and finished 4-4 overall. In the process, however, Northridge pulled off one of the biggest wins in its 6 years of Division I men’s volleyball competition with an upset of Hawaii on Saturday.

In their second match of the day, the Matadors defeated Hawaii, ranked No. 2 in the nation by Volleyball Monthly magazine, 15-13, 4-15, 15-11.

“The win over Hawaii was a big, big win for our program,” Northridge Coach John Price said. “This was a great starting spot for us.”

In Saturday’s first game, BYU defeated Northridge, 13-15, 15-8, 15-17. CSUN lost its final match of the day to fourth-ranked Stanford, 15-8, 15-8.

Northridge won its first 3 matches Friday. The Matadors defeated Fresno State (15-5, 15-4), San Luis Obispo (15-4, 15-13) and Manitoba of Canada (8-15, 15-11, 17-15), then lost to top-ranked USC, the defending NCAA champion, 15-9, 15-10. Northridge also lost to fifth-ranked Pepperdine, 15-11, 15-5, in its final match Friday.
