High School Basketball Roundup : Fallbrook Upsets No. 2 Poway, 50-49

Fallbrook High School, which led by 10 points with 4 minutes 30 seconds remaining to play, would not score again but held on to surprise previously unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Poway, 50-49, in a Palomar League game Wednesday night at Fallbrook.

After Travis Teagle scored on a slam dunk, Fallbrook (8-8 overall, 3-1 in league play) led, 50-40. Poway (15-1, 4-1) pressed, forced turnovers and pulled within 50-49. The Titans had the ball with 40 seconds left and ran down the clock to 8 seconds before throwing the ball out of bounds.

“I was thinking, ‘Let’s just get the game over with,’ ” Fallbrook Coach Russell Keith said. “We were just glad the game got over with when it did. It’s definitely our biggest win of the year.”

Teagle was 8 of 12 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the free throw line for a game-high 20 points. Greg Sorrell had 13 and Jay Blankenbeckler 12 for Poway.

In other Palomar League games:

Torrey Pines 81, San Dieguito 32--Courtie Miller led top-ranked Torrey Pines (18-1, 4-0) with 24 points, 13 rebounds, 5 blocks, 2 assists and 2 steals. Teammate Kevin Flanagan added 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Vista 66, Orange Glen 58--Orange Glen shot just 5 of 29 from the floor in the first half yet pulled to within 54-52 in the third quarter before Vista (5-12, 1-4) ran away. John Hauser scored 22 and Herbie Weston 19 for the Panthers. Shawn Macklin led Orange Glen (4-12, 0-4) with 21.

Avocado League

Oceanside 60, San Pasqual 54--Jerry Garrett scored 17 points and visiting Oceanside (10-4, 4-1) made 7 of 9 free throws in the fourth quarter to win a battle of league leaders. San Pasqual pulled within a point late in the fourth quarter after trailing, 37-24, at halftime. Erik Meek got 22 points and 11 rebounds for San Pasqual (6-7, 3-2), which made only 7 of 17 free throws.

El Camino 61, Escondido 54--Host El Camino (11-5, 4-1) hung on to a share of first place with Oceanside as Glen Ankton scored 17 points and Travis Gilley added 16. Escondido, which trailed, 48-40, after three quarters, got 23 points and 21 rebounds from Brooks Barnhard, but still fell to 8-6 and 3-2.

Carlsbad 63, San Marcos 54--Jay Kitti scored 23 points but it wasn’t enough for host San Marcos (5-10, 1-4). Carlsbad improved to 4-10 and 1-4.

City Central League

Crawford 69, Christian 58--Chris Johnson and Dana Hawkins scored 21 points each to lead host Crawford. Tracy Halton, Crawford’s point guard and scoring leader, missed the game with strep throat. Jay Gordon filled in efficiently, playing strong defense and scoring 8 points. Crawford (12-4, 2-0) converted 15 of 21 free throws in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory. Christian is 8-6 and 1-1.

Lincoln 84, St. Augustine 64--Joe Temple and Aaron Wilhite combined for 23 of Lincoln’s 26 first-quarter points as the Hornets (17-1, 2-0) opened a 26-11 lead. Wilhite finished with 29 points, 13 rebounds and 5 steals. Temple had 27 points, 8 rebounds and 10 steals. Mike Mossuto led all scorers with 30 and Bryan Cantwell added 18 for St. Augustine (1-13, 0-2).

San Diego 74, Hoover 41--Clark James and Milt Miller scored 16 points each and San Diego (10-3, 1-1) rolled at Hoover (1-14, 0-2). Andre Letchaw and Reynard Wells scored 11 points each and J.R. Greer added 10 for San Diego, which led, 19-7, after the first quarter.

City Eastern League

Morse 51, Patrick Henry 45--Morse went on an 8-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to take control at Patrick Henry. After Patrick Henry (7-8, 0-2) took a 39-36 lead, Morse (6-8, 2-0) got 2 baskets from Curtis Jones and 1 each from David Dunn and Lawrence Mothershed to take a 44-39 lead. Terence Hamilton and Bart Brandenburg each scored 12 points for Patrick Henry, which made just 1 of its first 11 shots and fell behind, 12-3, after the first quarter. Jones scored 13 for Morse and Mothershed added 12.

Serra 83, Mira Mesa 57--Jermaine Jordan scored 8 of his game-high 26 points during a 24-12 second-quarter run that carried host Serra (11-5, 2-0). Conrad Jones added 14 points, 9 in the second quarter, and Keith Laude had 13 for Serra, which led only 17-16 after the first quarter. Marc Ziegler led Mira Mesa (4-13, 0-2) with 21 points.

City Western League

University City 70, Mission Bay 63 (OT)--Jerome Price (23 points) scored 6 of University City’s 12 points in overtime as the Centurions (12-5, 2-0) won at Mission Bay. J.T. Thomas (19 points) of Mission Bay (8-6, 0-2) made two free throws with 40 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. University City’s Anthony Hill scored 12, Darnes Taylor 12 and Chris Whitehead 10. Keith Berkley and Brian Sorenson each had 12 for Mission Bay, whose leading scorer, Brett Grebing, missed the game because of the flu.

La Jolla 63, Kearny 49--Eric Litch scored 16 points, Kyle Kupiec 14, David Berteaux 12 and Forrest Sherman 10 for La Jolla (10-5, 2-0). Kearny (9-8, 1-1) got off to a 4-0 lead before La Jolla scored 14 unanswered points to take a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Mark Sanchez then scored 9 consecutive points for La Jolla in the second quarter.

Clairemont 65, USDHS 48--Ray McDavid scored a game-high 26 points and Alex Love added 18 to lead host Clairemont (9-1, 1-1). Love, a sophomore guard, finished 9 for 11 from the field. “(McDavid) is sort of a given,” Clairemont Coach Greg Lee said. “What makes us dangerous is if he gets some help.” USDHS dropped to 7-6 and 0-2.

Metro Conference

Coronado 58, Montgomery 42--Tom Mitchell scored 17 points and Jesse McNeal added 16 for Coronado (7-9, 5-2). Albert Maldonado had 24 for Montgomery (0-13, 0-7).

Southwest 82, Mar Vista 47--Will Tate had 19 points, Adalberto Silva added 18, Sean Swensen had 13 and Lawrence Estes 12 for Southwest (14-5, 6-0). Mar Vista is 2-14 and 1-5.

Chula Vista 65, Hilltop 51--Ritchie Greaser scored 18 points and Derek Chapman added 16 to lead Chula Vista (8-12, 5-2), which rallied from a 20-6 first-quarter deficit. Malcolm McCurdy scored 14 points to lead Hilltop (6-11, 2-3).

Sweetwater 89, Castle Park 59--Carlos Campbell scored 29 points and John Gilbert added 21 to lead visiting Sweetwater (17-2, 6-1). Castle Park is 4-12 and 3-4.

Girls

City Eastern League

Point Loma 85, Madison 15--Monica Filer scored 20 points and handed out a section-record 22 assists to lead top-ranked Point Loma (18-1, 2-0) at home. Chris Drumm had 27 points and Tyeast Brown added 14 points and 27 rebounds for the Pointers. Filer had set the section record with 21 assists in a victory over Bonita Vista Dec. 28.

Mira Mesa 52, Serra 46--Tweet Castillo scored 17 points to lead visiting Mira Mesa (13-4, 2-0). Pam Ross scored 22 to lead Serra (3-12, 0-2).

City Central League

Our Lady of Peace 57, Lincoln 56--Trailing by 1 with 17 seconds remaining, April Velk scored to give the Pilots (12-4, 2-0) the victory. Tammy Tavares scored 21 for OLP. Sheila Dixon had 27 for Lincoln (10-4, 1-1).
