High School Basketball Roundup : El Camino Takes Over First in Avocado

Travis Gilley scored a game-high 20 points and made 9 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter Wednesday to give visiting El Camino a 64-50 victory over Oceanside and sole possession of first place in the Avocado League.

El Camino (13-5, 6-1) took an 11-point lead at halftime and increased that to 46-31 by the end of the third quarter. Shaun Scurry scored 12 points for the Wildcats, while Todd Swanson had 11 assists and Dee Boyer 13 rebounds. Eric Mitchell scored 19 points for Oceanside (7-8, 5-2).

In other Avocado League boys’ games:

Rancho Buena Vista 70, San Pasqual 60--Rancho Buena Vista (7-11, 3-4) made 20 of 25 free throws and never trailed at San Pasqual. Darryl Parker (24 points) and Todd Fellars (15) led the Longhorns. Erik Meek had 35 points for San Pasqual (7-8, 4-3).

Escondido 60, Carlsbad 38--Escondido outscored visiting Carlsbad, 15-4, in the fourth quarter to pull away. Brooks Barnhard led Escondido (10-6, 5-2) with 24 points, and Chris Heintschel added 15. Carlsbad (7-9, 1-6) got 12 points from Calvin Coleman.

Ramona 72, San Marcos 62--Tony Newman had 18 points and 14 rebounds and Nate Hollingsworth scored 17 points and had 5 steals to lead Ramona (6-11, 3-4) at San Marcos. Jay Kitti scored 18 for San Marcos (5-12, 1-6).

Palomar League

Mt. Carmel 63, San Dieguito 48--Host San Dieguito made just 7 of 26 first-half shots and, despite an effective second-half press, couldn’t quite catch up. San Dieguito trailed, 32-20, at halftime. With the press troubling Mt. Carmel (12-6, 4-2), San Dieguito closed to within 6 points with 4 minutes to play but couldn’t get closer. Shane Knight scored 16 points for Mt. Carmel. Brian Malewicz had 27 for San Dieguito (7-11, 1-5).

Fallbrook 44, Orange Glen 39--Despite making just 15 of 50 shots and 11 of 20 free throws, Fallbrook won at home. The Warriors trailed by four after three quarters, but Fallbrook (9-9, 4-2) outscored Orange Glen, 14-5, in the fourth quarter.

Metro Conference

Southwest 58, Marian 47--Trailing, 51-47, with 1:39 to play, Marian had the ball with a chance to close, but a forced pass resulted in a turnover, and visiting Southwest remained undefeated in conference play.

Sweetwater 74, Hilltop 58--Cortez Rice made four 3-pointers and had 28 points at Hilltop as Sweetwater remained just a game out of first. Donal Hardin had 15 points for Hilltop (6-13, 2-5), and Chad Boyd had 12. Joe McDowell added 22 for Sweetwater (19-2, 8-1) and Carlos Campbell had 14.

Chula Vista 77, Coronado 42--Ritchie Greaser scored 22 points and had seven rebounds to lead Chula Vista.

Mar Vista 61, Montgomery 46--Mar Vista pressed early and forced several turnovers in the first quarter to set the tone against winless Montgomery.
