San Jose State’s Berry Has This Player’s Respect
I played basketball for Coach Bill Berry (now of San Jose State) in 1974-75 as a freshman at Cal. He was serving as coach of the freshman team and assistant coach of the varsity.
I had the utmost respect for Berry both as a coach and as a person. He always treated his players equally and fairly, whether they were the star or the 10th man on the squad.
He would occasionally resort to using swear words as a means to motivate the team. However, nobody was ever insulted by it and never felt that it was anything more than a motivational tactic. He was far too considerate to ever verbally abuse a player purposely.
